School Nurses: Supporting Education, Advancing Student Health

School is barely underway, and already it is time to plan for flu season. So, without delay, please take that critical step in flu prevention - get vaccinated! As trusted health professionals and health advocates in school communities, it is important that school nurses provide a strong recommendation that everyone 6 months and older needs the flu vaccine every year and lead by example by getting the vaccine yourself. The goal is to keep students, staff and school nurses healthy and in school every day. For more information visit NASN's seasonal influenza resources page.

Best wishes for healthy students and healthy school nurses this school year!

Your Recommendation for the Flu Vaccine Can Make a Difference
Schools provide an excellent venue for the exchange of the influenza virus between students, school staff, and the broader community. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent flu. A strong recommendation to get vaccinated by a healthcare provider - including the school nurse - is linked to actual vaccine uptake. Consider using the NASN educational campaign, Fighting the Flu Happens at School!, to voice your recommendation.

Increase Your Advocacy Skills with an Advocacy Education Award
Deadline for application October 15, 2014
This Award was originally named in honor of Sally Williams, NASN's first President (1970-71). Past President Williams, of California, worked tirelessly for many years to convince the National Education Association (NEA) to address the unique needs and contributions of school nurses. On July 4, 1968 her efforts resulted in the establishment of the Department of Nursing within the NEA. Her vision was to bring school nurses together with a common voice and goal in speaking out on legislative issues that impacted school health.

Wisconsin School Nurses Encourage Back-to-School Vaccinations
LaCrosseTribune.com
NASN Member and President of the Wisconsin Association of School Nurses (WASN) Rachel Gallagher said, "The best way to keep students healthy and in school is to have them immunized prior to the school year." WASN reminds parents of the importance of back-to-school vaccinations, especially with a federal court ruling this summer in New York upholding a law allowing schools and health departments to send unvaccinated students home during vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks. The law is similar to Wisconsin's. Read this article.
