Transparency and Openness Guidelines in Science   
 
CEGA directors Edward Miguel and Temina Madon co-authored an article in Science announcing a new set of principles for academic journals, called the Transparency and Openness Guidelines (TOP). To date, more than 400 journals and organizations have signed on, including the Berkeley Initiative for Transparency in the Social Sciences (BITSS).
 

The Goldilocks Project    

The Goldilocks Project is a toolkit developed by CEGA and Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) to help organizations and funders build "right-fit" monitoring and evaluation (M&E) systems. On July 21, the Project held a pre-launch event in Washington, DC to discuss lessons from a series of case studies with NGOs, funders, and impact investors. Look for the toolkit to launch this Fall!

Energy Efficiency Study in The New York Times

CEGA affiliates Meredith Fowlie and Catherine Wolfram recently evaluated the efficiency of the nation's largest residential energy efficiency program, the Weatherization Assistance Program, along with co-author Michael Greenstone. Their study, featured in The New York Times, suggests that energy efficiency investments do not deliver savings to households, as had been expected.

Annual Bank Conference on Africa  

 

Last month more than 100 scholars and policymakers gathered at The University of California, Berkeley for the second edition of the Annual Bank Conference on Africa (ABCA). The World Bank recently published a summary of the conference.

  

Impact Evaluation: A Three-Pronged Approach

 

The African Development Bank has published an article by CEGA in their quarterly journal, Evaluation Matters. The article describes a training program implemented with the Inter-American Development Bank that seeks to institutionalize impact evaluation within the agency and across the region.

OPPORTUNITIES

Grants for Meta-Analysis and Research Transparency

Researchers are invited to submit proposals to the 2015 Grants Program in "Social Science Meta-Analysis and Research Transparency" (SSMART). The program will fund research that advances the reliability and validity of social science. Submit your application by Wednesday, September 6, 2015. 
  

The Leamer-Rosenthal Prizes for Open Social Science   

 

The Leamer-Rosenthal Prizes for Open Social Science were established to encourage research transparency and the teaching of open, reproducible research methods. The prizes are supported by the John Templeton Foundation. The deadline for nominations is September 13, 2015.
