Here is your news for March 31 - April 4, 2014
at Sullins Academy.
Board of Directors Update
March 4, 2014

The Sullins Academy Board of Directors held a monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 4. The board first heard a presentation from SPA President Melissa Steward on results thus far, plans for the remainder of the year and the upcoming March 29 "Bring Back the BBQ" spring fundraiser. After approving prior meetings' minutes, the board also heard reports from the following committees: Audit, Advancement, Finance, Academic Affairs, Building & Grounds and Committee on Directors. Head of School Search Committee Chair Suzanne Senter discussed wrap-ups to the search process. Dr. Ron Sykes gave a Head of School report. In discussing old business, the board reviewed next steps in revisiting the school's strategic plan, as well as the proposed process for reviewing board policies this school year.
In new business, the board chair discussed plans for the new Head of School and President announcements and transitions. The board approved a promotion and new title for Mrs. Twana Meade to "Associate Head for Business Affairs." The board also approved new role descriptions and a new organizational chart that took those positions into consideration.

Open House & Art Show on April 3
Next Thursday, April 3, Sullins Academy will be hosting the Annual Spring Open House & Student Art Show.  We have invited over 500 families from the community and welcome you to bring any friends, family or neighbors who would be interested in learning more about the wonderful opportunities Sullins has to offer! Our Middle School Admissions Ambassadors will be leading tours from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. and from 6:30 - 7:00 we invite attendees to join our Division Heads, parents, and Student Ambassadors in the library for a question and answer session.  Our current families are encouraged to visit the Student Art Show and welcome visiting families to Sullins!  For more information, please contact Becca Powers in the Admissions Office at rpowers@sullinsacademy.org or 276-669-4101.

Math Review Sessions
Ms. Merrihue and Mrs. Hampton will be offering free practice sessions for the Algebra I and Geometry standardized tests.  End-of-course exams are required in both VA and TN public schools in order to place students into an appropriate math course.  These tests tend to be in a different format from our exams so we will be focusing on taking those types of tests in addition to reviewing the content. Sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school until 4:15 p.m. in Mrs. Hampton's room beginning March 24.  Students are not expected to attend every session.  Simply come when convenient.  As with most things, more preparation generally leads to more success.  Even if students are not able to attend often, we highly recommend taking these practice tests independently:

Virginia

Select Algebra I or Geometry
40 questions
I'm Ready Let's Start
*You can do this as many times as you wish.  It will generate different questions each time.

Tennessee
http://www.state.tn.us/education/assessment/sec_samplers.shtml
There are three Algebra I practice tests you can do.
If you scroll down, then there are also two sets of item samplers that would be helpful.
Unfortunately, there are no geometry practice tests for TN.  I recommend using the VA geometry test to practice instead.  See instructions above.

GREETINGS FROM THE ART ROOM!

The Art Show is quickly approaching and the students have each chosen a piece of art that they want to exhibit. On Monday, March 31, the Specials Hall will be transformed into an art gallery with a variety of masterpieces. The show will be on display for at least a week, so plan to visit any time between Monday afternoon and Friday.

See you there!

Archery @ Sullins Academy

In cooperation with Allen and Veronica Hurley, Sullins Academy has recently initiated a new archery program for students in the 5th - 8th grades. Currently there are approximately 20 students participating in the program, equally divided between boys and girls. The archers are already earning achievement pins and improving with every practice.

Sullins' archery program is registered with USA Archery and Junior Olympic Development Association as an Authorized Club. The new program is also sanctioned and guided by USA Archery.

New indoor equipment has just been installed in the gym so that practices can be held on campus following school. An outdoor equipment set will also be completed and installed soon.

The Sullins Archery Team plans to compete in a tournament against Tri-Cities Christian this season.

If you are interested in learning more about the archery program, stop by a practice and check it out.

Thank You,
Chris Langley

At our morning meeting on March 24, Dr. Sykes reminded all of us that our character trait for March is INTEGRITY. After a few brief comments on personal integrity, he called forward Chris Langley. Chris is one of two custodial workers who give us a clean, healthy learning environment every day. At 7' tall and 300 lbs., Chris is hard to miss as he vacuums and cleans for our children.
Dr. Sykes declared Chris a Sullins hero for his actions in the past few weeks.  More than once Chris has found sizable amounts of cash students have dropped or left on the floor.  The second time he turned in a $20 bill he commented that the student who lost it must feel bad.
Thank you, Chris, for being a Sullins hero of integrity. Chris can be seen on weekends playing defensive tackle and left tackle for the Twin City Thunder.
