IMPORTANT
WEATHER NOTICE

Sullins Academy will add immediately a ONE HOUR DELAY to its other alternatives for delayed schedules.  If, because of inclement weather or concern for "black ice," we announce a one hour delay, the Early Room will open at 8:30 and school will start at 9:15.  The new schedule will address both the concern for safety and the concern of working parents.

8th Grade is Stretching the Truth
8th grade Language Arts classes were asked to write a tall tale similar to those about Paul Bunyan. The assignment required them to take something ordinary and "stretch" the truth.

Just an Average Ski Trip
by: Hugh Tagert

I have weird loves for certain things that I can't explain; for example, I love mariachi bands. I find their music extremely annoying, but I can't stop myself from listening to them. Also, I like the sound of a panda sneezing. But, the weirdest one that I can't explain is that I love garden hoses. Don't ask me why, I have no idea how to answer that. There's just something about them that keeps me calm. I know, it's weird. But, believe it or not, this strange love saved my life one day. Let me tell you about it.
It was the winter and my family and I had planned a ski trip at a huge resort in Wyoming. This resort was extremely dangerous in some parts, but it had areas for intermediate and beginner skiers. I was excited to get out on the slopes, but I also was a little tense about it. I needed something to calm me down, and like I said, garden hoses calm me down. So, I decided to take my favorite one and put it in my pocket. Then I grabbed my skis and I was off.
I didn't really know where to go, but I already had my lift ticket so I just looked for a place to put on my skis. I slipped them on and headed down to the first lift I saw. I got aboard the lift, but it just kept going and going, way past all of the easier slopes. I figured there had to be a slope that could suit my level. So I didn't worry about it, I just kept waiting. Once I got to the top, I could hardly even see! We were so high that we were in a cloud!
I kept trying to find the right slopes, but I never saw anything! Suddenly, my skis started to speed down a steep slope! I was going faster than I'd ever been before! But the next thing I knew, I flew off a cliff almost 500 feet in the air! I didn't know what to do! Then I remembered the hose in my back pocket! I grabbed it, put one end to my mouth and put the other one in the back of my pants. I blew as hard as I could, and my pants began to inflate!
When I hit the ground, I just bounced right back up again, but this time I was twice as high! Every time I hit the ground I just got higher and higher! I was soaring through the air, going over 200 miles per hour. It was so peaceful up there. The sound of the birds chirping, the deafening sound of jets going by, and the screams of terror from people regretting that they decided to skydive. I just wanted to stay up there forever.
I knew I had to go down sometime, so I slowly started to deflate my pants. Wow! What luck! I landed right by the entrance of my cabin. I came up to the door, took my skiing boots off, and walked inside.
"How was the skiing?" my mother asked as I came inside.
"Just the usual," I said with a smirk.
