Reading Rocks
at Sullins Academy!
Our school is celebrating Reading Month in February again this year.  Our slogan is Reading Rocks at Sullins Academy! We are excited about the celebration and look forward to the focus this brings to reading and its importance to children's academic success.

Students will be involved in a variety of activities during the month. On February 13, the children will enjoy a presentation by The Barter Players.  Students in preschool through fifth grade will see Little House on the Prairie, while the middle school will watch Macbeth.  Students will be involved in contests specific for their grade level with prizes being given for first through third place.  On February 21, the entire school will participate in STAR - Sit Tight and Read.  Everyone in the school will have twenty minutes of uninterrupted silent reading time.  Classes from preschool through fifth grade will have guest readers from the community who will come and share stories with them during their library time.  And finally, on March 7, the middle school and fifth grade will have an oldies themed Sock Hop in the gymnasium.

A group of students has already recorded radio spots that will be aired throughout the entire month of February on WABN in Abingdon, and the Bristol Broadcasting group of stations including WXBQ.  Tune in to these stations to hear our PSA's.  Another group of students will be filming a commercial that will be aired on the local community channel of the BVU system.  These provide an opportunity for us to share our message about reading with the community.

We look forward to a wonderful month long celebration. We want to encourage our students to recognize the importance of reading in their everyday lives, as well as to share the message that reading is fun.  Join us as we celebrate reading and discover that Reading Rocks at Sullins Academy!

Race to 100%
Parent participation can be a make it or break it when asking outside community leaders to support our school.  One of my goals as Development Director is to reach further in our community for added support.  Today we are at 41% in parent participation of our Annual Fund Campaign. Last year, we reached a total of 81% by Friday, February 14th, I would love to announce that we reached 100%. Remember - pledges count also and any size gift will count.  Will you partner with me on this and beat that 81%?

*All classes that reach 100% will get a

FREE DRESS DAY.

**The class with the highest participation or who reaches 100% first will win an

EAGLE ROCKIN' CLASS PARTY.

Sullins Alumni Update

On Saturday, January 25th several Sullins Alumni competed in the Northeast Regional Swimming Championships in Kingsport, Tennessee.  This meet required swimmers to swim their events in the morning and try to earn a spot to swim in the finals that evening.  Blakeleigh Mathes (200 free and 100 free), Daniel Chang (200 IM and 100 free), and Kate Hornsby  (200 IM and 100 free) all made the finals in the events that they swam.  These swimmers also made times to qualify them to swim at the Tennessee State Swim Meet on Feb. 14th and 15th.  Logan Carmody (100 fly and 100 breast) and Caroline Leonard (100 back and 50 free) also swam in this meet and qualified to swim in the consolation heat of their events.  All of these swimmers also swam on relays that finished in the top 3.

SPA Spring Event!

The Sullins Parents Association is at work planning the "spring event," a barbeque and silent auction with the Black Lillies for entertainment. The big event will be MARCH 29, 2014, and it's going to be a lot of fun!  Tickets will go on sale very soon, so keep looking for information in The Eagle's Nest.
An event like this requires months of planning, so we are seeking your help and support now.  Do you have an item or idea for the silent auction?  If so, please click on the link below, print the donation form, and return it to the front desk. You may also contact our  Director of Development, Katy Sikorski.  Underwriters are welcome at the following levels:  $500, $1,000, $2,500 and $5,000.  Please contact Katy Sikorski (ksikorski@sullinsacademy.org) or me for details.
The barbeque and silent auction will be here soon. If you are interested in volunteering for some part of this event (sending invitations, selling tickets, decorating, setting up the silent auction, etc.), we can guarantee that your help will be needed. As the plans are being developed, feel free to get on board.  Thank you for any support you can offer.  Save March 29 for a great time at this Sullins community event.

Important Note to Parents
As we progress through January and February, we feel sure there will be school closings due to bad weather.  Sullins Academy closings will be communicated through Parent Alerts, through RenWeb, emails and our local television stations.
Because our school enrollment comes from a 40-mile radius around the campus, there may be mornings where our immediate area is considered safe and yet your area is questionable.  Please do not endanger life, limb or property to come to school if you deem it dangerous.  Simply call in or send a note the following day and the absence will be excused.
Parents will be the final authority on the safety of their children.
