Greetings!
Here is your news for January 20 - 24, 2014
at Sullins Academy.
Sullins Teachers Love Their Students
null Teachers, parents, and grandparents are key components of every student's success in the world of learning. Students spend at least 7 hours each weekday in the classroom with teachers. The influence that a teacher has on each student is significant.  From greeting the children with smiles as they enter the building, wiping tears, celebrating milestones, or saying an encouraging word, Sullins teachers love their students. They create opportunities for independent learning as well as model good reading and writing strategies that may be used in and out of school. Our Lower School educators are asking questions and providing opportunities that create an atmosphere where students learn to believe in themselves and their individual talents. This happens when kids feel safe to try even if they make mistakes, and learn the rewards of success through hard work. Our teachers see both as key components to growth and development. Lady Bird Johnson once said, "Children are apt to live up to what you believe of them." Let's remember this advice from the former First Lady as we continue to work together helping our students feel valuable and believe in themselves.

Eagle Day

With the success of our first Eagle Day in early November, Sullins will be hosting another such day  on Wednesday, January 29. Eagle Days are occasions in which Sullins students in grades 1-8 are encouraged to bring a friend to school. Ideally, the guest will be a peer who is interested in learning more about our school. If you have referred a neighbor, co-worker, or friend to Sullins, this is the perfect opportunity for that student to experience a day as an Eagle!  Dr. Sykes and I will be available to talk with parents and give tours, and our faculty will  provide a wonderful day for our guests!

If your child is planning on bringing a friend, please let me know by Monday, January 27, so our teachers can prepare.

PARENTS
We are currently at 34% participation in annual giving by current parents. Our faculty and staff and Board of Directors have reached 100%.  Please understand that parent participation is  essential to having a successful year and  in discussing gifts with foundations and corporations.
THE AMOUNT IS NOT IMPORTANT! HOWEVER, YOUR PARTICIPATION IS VERY IMPORTANT.
Please mail or drop  by your  gift or  pledge card so your name will be added  to those already counted.  Remember, pledges allow us to  count you as participating and may be paid any time between now and the end of school.  Last year, you as Sullins parents reached 81% participation in annual giving; therefore, I know you can surpass that number this year.

SPA Spring Event!

The Sullins Parents Association is at work planning the "spring event," a barbeque and silent auction with the Black Lillies for entertainment. The big event will be MARCH 29, 2014, and it's going to be a lot of fun!  Tickets will go on sale very soon, so keep looking for information in The Eagle's Nest.
An event like this requires months of planning, so we are seeking your help and support now.  Do you have an item or idea for the silent auction?  If so, please click on the link below, print the donation form, and return it to the front desk. You may also contact our  Director of Development, Katy Sikorski.  Underwriters are welcome at the following levels:  $500, $1,000, $2,500 and $5,000.  Please contact Katy Sikorski ([email protected]) or me for details.
The barbeque and silent auction will be here soon. If you are interested in volunteering for some part of this event (sending invitations, selling tickets, decorating, setting up the silent auction, etc.), we can guarantee that your help will be needed. As the plans are being developed, feel free to get on board.  Thank you for any support you can offer.  Save March 29 for a great time at this Sullins community event.

--Melissa Steward, SPA President

**Important Note
to Parents
**
As we progress through January and February, we feel sure there will be school closings due to bad weather.  Sullins Academy closings will be communicated through Parent Alerts, through RenWeb, emails and our local television stations.
Because our school enrollment comes from a 40-mile radius around the campus, there may be mornings where our immediate area is considered safe and yet your area is questionable.  Please do not endanger life, limb or property to come to school if you deem it dangerous.  Simply call in or send a note the following day and the absence will be excused.
Parents will be the final authority on the safety of their children.

Golf Season is Just Around the Corner
Mrs. Vandeventer will be meeting  with those boys who are interested in trying out for the golf team in late January. The golf season officially begins in late February.  If your middle school son is interested in golf, take advantage of warm days to practice.  Golfers will be playing matches at The Virginian Golf Club.  More information will be coming your way soon.

Calling All Griddle Gurus!!
On February 14, prepare to celebrate hearts and flowers.... AND PANCAKES! In recognition of parents' support for Sullins, families will enjoy breakfast together at school.  If you fancy yourself a breakfast chef, specializing in pancakes, contact Katy Sikorski now to sign up.  Griddles, mix, and cooking utensils are provided. The only thing we need is your cooking expertise.
