Greetings!
Here is your news for December 23, 2013 - January 6, 2014
at Sullins Academy.
Check it out!
Sullins Academy is proud to announce the launch of a brand new website this week. If you haven't had the opportunity to browse the new page, take a look at www.sullinsacademy.org and tell us what you think.
Early in 2013, the Board of Directors began working toward updating the Sullins Academy web presence in order to stay current with marketing materials and also to upgrade web functionality for current parents, prospective families and donors.
Several companies were interviewed and ultimately Schoolyard was chosen to build the new site. After much deliberation and many hours of hard work by writers, photographers, programmers and web developers, the new site launched late Wednesday night.
New features include easier navigation, responsive design (i.e., page is viewable on any device that has internet), a built-in photo gallery, athletic pages, menu options across the top, an option for online giving and a slider bar with the latest in Sullins news and events.
At the bottom of every page, users will find links to the Sullins Academy social media pages, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We invite you to peruse and share the pages of the website with your friends and family. Keep in mind that this is a new website and depending upon your computer or electronic device, there may be some adjustments that have to be made.  If you experience any problems trying to access the website, please contact Mara Barrett after January 6, 2014. Until then, Happy Browsing!

Search Committee Update

The Search Committee has been hard at work over the last few weeks. The Head of School search is moving ahead in accordance with the timeline the Search Committee developed in the fall.  Thanks to the thorough and insightful input we received from our faculty, staff, parent and grandparent/alumni advisory groups, as well as our Student Council members, we developed a very good position profile that highlights the strengths of Sullins Academy.  There has been a great deal of interest in the position and a lot of positive feedback from potential candidates about our school and community.  We had 27 candidates apply for the position.  Southern Teachers Agency has done a terrific job helping the Search Committee through this process.  They conducted pre-interviews with the candidates, completed background checks, and met with the committee to help narrow the field of candidates to a manageable number.  The Search Committee conducted Skype interviews with eight semifinalists this week and is in the process of narrowing this group to a small number of final candidates.  Those finalists will be invited to the school in January for an intensive and inclusive interview process.  Our hope is that by the end of January the committee will make a candidate recommendation to Board of Directors, which will then select the next Head of School.  Thank you for your continued assistance and support as we go through this process.

A Note From Dr. Ronald Sykes

 Dear Sullins Parents,

Some parents have asked me if there were some way to honor their child's teachers without purchasing a retail gift.  While presents are not expected, over the years Sullins Academy has developed some ways to honor our faculty and staff, if that is your choice:

1.  Teacher/Staff Luncheon Fund
- All donations given to this fund will provide a lunch one day each month for all teachers and staff.
2.  Endowment for Teacher Compensation
- Contributions to this fund support teachers' salaries.  This fund provides a lifelong benefit to our educators and allows us to retain quality teachers.

3.  Retirement Fund

- Gifts to this fund help to offset the cost of managing this retirement benefit for teachers and staff.
4.  Lonia Matney Professional Development
- This fund allows our teachers to attend conferences, workshops, etc. for their continuing education.

A contribution in any amount to one of these funds will honor a specific teacher or administrator in these ways.  When restricted to one of these funds, your gift will be used as directed.

Our Development Office will send a note to the teacher(s)/staff member(s) acknowledging your generosity. As always, our students thank you for the many ways you share your time and invest your resources to make our school strong.

Have a wonderful and joyous Christmas.

Okay, We CAN Read a Book
AND Make a Movie!

Claire la trailer
Claire la trailer

As part of the middle school language arts program, the students were asked to produce a movie trailer advertising their book report book. The students read their books, wrote a summary of the book, made a story board for their movie trailer, and then produced the movie trailer in iMovie.  They filmed, took pictures, added music and voice overs to their trailers.  The students enjoyed this project and asked if they could do it again!

School of Music
Set to Expand
Beginning in January, Sullins Academy School of Music will expand the availability of music lessons.
In addition to guitar lessons, strings offered will include violin, mandolin, and banjo. Voice lessons will also be available for those who wish to enroll.
Piano will continue as the mainstay of the School of Music. Finally, brass and woodwinds lessons will also be available for interested students.
The School of Music is a fee-based opportunity to study an instrument during the school day.  Your child will be scheduled at a convenient time to his/her school program.  No more hustle to get to classes across town.  No more conflicts with sports teams. If you are interested in quality lessons in any of the above areas, please email Dr. Sykes at rsykes@sullinsacademy.org so we can finish scheduling and begin lessons by mid- January.
