Can you guess who, from Sullins, spent ten weeks on an archaeological dig in Israel at Tell-el-Hesi? (The answer is Mary-Margaret Justis!)

Can you guess, who from Sullins, had a pet monkey while growing up? (Check next week's Eagle's Nest for the answer to this question.)

Sharing
the Spirit of Christmas

'Tis the season for giving and Sullins students and families are in the spirit!  From Preschool through Middle School, items are being collected for 7 agencies and organizations so that others will have a Merry Christmas. The idea of giving to others rather than exchanging gifts among classmates has been a Sullins tradition for several years. This practice fits well with the December character trait of "generosity."
The 66 Middle School students, through their advisory groups, have adopted children from the Boys and Girls Club of Bristol.  Advisors shop for items listed on wish lists, students wrap the gifts and deliver them to the Club prior to Christmas.  Additionally, 8th grade students will serve lunch at The United Company Soup Kitchen for 2 weeks in December and 2 weeks in January.
Area children will also benefit from the efforts of 5th grade, 1st grade, and kindergarten who are filling stockings for YWCA preschoolers, providing snacks for the Children's Advocacy Center, and collecting socks and underwear for homeless children, respectively.
Ms. Jessee's 4th grade have planned a trip to the Abingdon Health and Rehabilitation Center where the children will deliver blankets and entertain the residents with Christmas carols. Second and third graders are directing their efforts on behalf of the men and women at Bristol's Haven of Rest Rescue Mission.  Last but not least, area pets will be the beneficiaries of our Preschool's kindness through the donations of pet food our little ones have collected.  We hope our children learn the true spirit of Christmas from these activities.
A Note From Dr. Ronald Sykes

 Dear Sullins Parents,

Some parents have asked me if there were some way to honor their child's teachers without purchasing a retail gift.  While presents are not expected, over the years Sullins Academy has developed some ways to honor our faculty and staff, if that is your choice:

1.  Teacher/Staff Luncheon Fund
- All donations given to this fund will provide a lunch one day each month for all teachers and staff.
2.  Endowment for Teacher Compensation
- Contributions to this fund support teachers' salaries.  This fund provides a lifelong benefit to our educators and allows us to retain quality teachers.

3.  Retirement Fund

- Gifts to this fund help to offset the cost of managing this retirement benefit for teachers and staff.
4.  Lonia Matney Professional Development
- This fund allows our teachers to attend conferences, workshops, etc. for their continuing education.

A contribution in any amount to one of these funds will honor a specific teacher or administrator in these ways.  When restricted to one of these funds, your gift will be used as directed.

Our Development Office will send a note to the teacher(s)/staff member(s) acknowledging your generosity. As always, our students thank you for the many ways you share your time and invest your resources to make our school strong.

Have a wonderful and joyous Christmas.

Ron Sykes

Blazers Run Amuck!
Please take a moment and be sure your child has his or her own blazer. Once that is confirmed, label the blazer with your child's name if that has not already been done. Blazers have been going home with the wrong people! If you discover your child is in possession of someone else's blazer, please return it to the proper owner or your child's teacher. There are missing and switched blazers all around town. Help return them to their rightful owners. :)
SPA Spring Event!
I know everyone is focused on Christmas; however, I am already thinking about the Sullins spring fundraiser.  The SPA is planning a barbeque and silent auction, with a band for entertainment. It's going to be lots of fun!
An event like this requires months of planning, so we are seeking your help and support now.  Do you have an item or idea for the silent auction?  If so, please click on the link below, print the donation form, and return it to the front desk. You may also contact our new Director of Development, Katy Sikorski.  Underwriters are welcome at the following levels:  $500, $1000, $2500 and $5000.  Please contact Katy Sikorski or me for details.
The barbeque and silent auction will be here soon, so plans are being developed now.  Thank you for any help and/or support you can offer.  Looking forward to seeing at this Sullins community event.

Dear Parents:

Penguin Patch Holiday Shoppe is just around the corner.  Students will begin shopping the week of December 16th.  Please see your child's Friday Folder or email me at kellysmcnamara@yahoo.com for more information.  Budget envelopes and shopping times will be sent home next week.  Anyone that would like to volunteer to help with the shop can also email me.  The more volunteers, the merrier!

Merry Christmas!

Okay, We CAN Read a Book
AND Make a Movie!
Christopher LA trailer

As part of the middle school language arts program, the students were asked to produce a movie trailer advertising their book report book. The students read their books, wrote a summary of the book, made a story board for their movie trailer, and then produced the movie trailer in iMovie.  They filmed, took pictures, added music and voice overs to their trailers.  The students enjoyed this project and asked if they could do it again!

SPELLING BEE!

Sullins Academy participates in the Scripps Spelling Bee that is held in Knoxville, Tennessee.  In order to select our school representative, the classes conduct classroom spelling bees for each grade level.  First grade through eighth grade holds a bee with the winners from grades three through eight taking part in the school-wide bee.  The student winning the school-wide contest will represent Sullins Academy at the 4th Annual Regional Spelling Bee we host in February.  The Regional winner will go to Knoxville in March.

On Friday, December 13, 2013, at 2:00 in the afternoon, six students will gather on stage in the gymnasium to participate in our school-wide spelling bee.  They will have an audience of peers, teachers, and parents to lend support.  Good luck to our classroom winners!
