Can you guess who, from Sullins, spent ten weeks on an archaeological dig in Israel at Tell-el-Hesi? (Look for the answer in next week's Eagle's Nest.)

Did you know that on the opening day of the current Sullins Academy campus, students marched in the snow from the modular units on Blevins Blvd., accompanied by a bag piper (Dr. Craig McDonald)?

The Eagle's Nest
Greetings!
Here is your news for December 9-13 at Sullins Academy.
Sports at Sullins Academy
The Sullins student athletes who represent our school in athletic competition truly personify the spirit of the eagle.  Though we are a small, independent school, our middle school sports programs have a reputation of being like the eagle; very competitive, hardworking, persistent, and graceful.  Year after year, we have continued success within our many sports programs.  Students and coaches dedicate their time and efforts to competing in cross country, swimming, basketball, golf, and volleyball.  Each year, these student athletes are supported by our amazing and energetic cheerleaders.  Sullins athletes are coached not only within the area of their sport, but also are taught to compete with sportsmanship, respect, grace, and leadership.  Many of our natural leaders within our student body have evolved from our sports programs.  Our student athletes are coached and mentored by Athletic Director Vera Vandeventer, Paul McNamara (cross country), Amy Morris (swimming), Allen Hurley (basketball), John and Vera Vandeventer (golf), Dale Casey (volleyball), Kaye Crutchfield (cheerleading), Robin Cozart and Blake Bassett (tennis).  We are grateful for the volunteer time these individuals invest in our students.

Okay, We CAN Read a Book
AND Make a Movie!

Lane's Language Arts trailer
Lane's Language Arts trailer
As part of the middle school language arts program, the students were asked to produce a movie trailer advertising their book report book. The students read their books, wrote a summary of the book, made a story board for their movie trailer, and then produced the movie trailer in iMovie.  They filmed, took pictures, added music and voice overs to their trailers.  The students enjoyed this project and asked if they could do it again!
An Evening to Remember
On Wednesday, December 4 Sullins shared a fantastic evening with the legendary Ricky Skaggs. After being entertained by the East Tennessee State University Bluegrass Band, the critically acclaimed, Ricky Skaggs, performed.  The intimate evening concluded when he shared words of wisdom with the audience.
A big Thank You to Allen and Veronica Hurley for opening their home to host such a lovely evening. Thank you to Ricky Skaggs for sharing an evening and dedicating time and talents to Sullins Academy. Thank you also, to all of those who supported this special event.  As always, I feel blessed to be a part of such a giving school.

Three Items of Interest from the Sullins Academy Library

I.   Thank You For Supporting
The Scholastic Book Fair!

Dear Parents,

I would like to extend a note of gratitude to you for your support of our Scholastic Book Fair.  I am pleased to announce that we had a huge growth in sales and even received a 5% bonus in Scholastic Dollars.  I decided to take our proceeds in Scholastic Dollars which doubled the amount that we would have gotten if I had taken cash alone.  This is a great benefit for the library as we purchase new books, book cases, and other needed items.

Your continued support of the library is heartwarming, as is your recognition of  the importance of getting reading materials into the hands of your child.  To inspire a child to read is so important to their educational success.  Again, I want to thank you for your continued support of our wonderful Sullins Academy Library.

Warm Regards,
Judy Stamper

III.  RenWeb Library Reminder

Don't forget that you have the capability to click on the Library tab in your RenWeb account to keep up with your child's library activity.  You can see which books are checked out, when they are due, and be aware of any overdue books.  (Remember that we don't charge for overdue books.)  You can also look through the library catalog to see a listing of titles that we have in our library.

Thank You, Katy!
Thank you to Katy Davidson and her crew of helpers for managing all the work that went into decorating the holiday float for this year's Bristol Christmas Parade. Both children and parents alike, enjoyed the unseasonably warm temperatures while sharing Christmas spirit and Eagle pride. The Sullins float followed the dancing and tumbling Eagle cheerleaders down State Street while sharing special treats with those gathered to watch the parade. Thanks again for all of your hard work!!
