Greetings!
Here is your news for Nov. 18-22 at Sullins Academy.
A long-ago Thanksgiving Feast at Martin Hall.
"My Grandfather is Like an Eggplant..."

November 26 will mark the thirty-fourth celebration of Grandparents' Day at Sullins Academy.  This very special occasion was started in 1979 by then Headmaster B. C. Rauchle.  He explained his intent this way:  "I want our students to be aware of the blessings that they have because they are members of a loving and caring family unit that includes not only parents, but grandparents as well."   On that first occasion, more than 200 guests attended an assembly that included a program of songs, classroom visits, and a Thanksgiving feast.  Some grandparents were unable to participate, so students were permitted to invite "grand - friends," in the form of uncles, aunts, babysitters, and neighbors.

Over time, a few aspects of Grandparents' Day have changed, but the purpose remains the same - to honor our grandparents or their substitutes and give them an opportunity to witness the educational benefits their grandchildren are receiving from Sullins Academy.

Five years ago, a second day of celebration was added so that grandparents could spend more time with their grandchildren, prior to the musical program and early dismissal on Grandparents' Day.  With the help of the Hospitality Committee of the Sullins Parents Association, a breakfast is now held on the Monday before the big day.  After the morning meal, guests are invited to spend time in the classrooms, accompany their loved ones to the Book Fair, and in the case of Preschool and Kindergarten classes, enjoy a Thanksgiving Feast at lunch.

Over the years, faculty members have been creative in planning special gifts and activities for grandparents during their visit to Sullins.  In 1982, for example, the fifth and sixth grade students were asked to compare their grandparents with a fruit, vegetable or dessert as part of a writing assignment in language arts.  Some notable responses were:  "My grandmother is like sweet potatoes because she's very sweet and squishy;" and "My grandfather is like an eggplant because he is slick, smooth and doesn't have much hair."

Everyone at Sullins is looking forward to continuing the Grandparents' Day traditions on Monday, November 25 and Tuesday, November 26.  If your family members have not yet notified us of plans to attend, please remind them to do so by November 20.

NOTE:

If any guests require handicap access or special assistance, please let Ms. Justis know by November 20.  The easiest entry into the gym, where Monday and Tuesday events will take place, is at the back door near the cafeteria.  (Call 276-669-4101 or email mmjustis@sullinsacademy.org)

BIG Plans For The Year Ahead

Sullins Parents,

Hopefully, you received an email invitation a few days ago to spend an evening with Ricky Skaggs, on December 4, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Allen Hurley.  The Sullins Parents Association has been given a remarkable opportunity to receive the proceeds from this private performance by music legend, Ricky Skaggs, thanks to his friendship with the Hurley family .   Only forty (40) seats are available for this event, and Sullins families have priority in reserving those tickets until November 25.  After that date, individuals in the community will be given a chance to participate if any seats are unsold.  So, if you are interested in attending, please reserve your spot by emailing  mmjustis@sullinsacademy.org or call Ms. Justis at (276) 669 - 4101.

I know the fall is a really busy time at the school, and I appreciate the commitment the parents at Sullins Academy make to the school by providing many volunteer hours and supporting the SPA fundraisers.  However, I am going to jump past December and remind you to go ahead and mark your calendars for our coming attractions in 2014, which include Family Fun Night at the end of January, the Valentine's Day Pancake Breakfast in February, and our big event, a Spring Barbeque and Silent Auction.  We will be sending "save the date" reminders in the coming weeks about the Spring Barbeque, but I hope you will start thinking of all those great auction items you might contribute or purchase.  For new families, please ask your ambassadors about past Sullins auctions if you need ideas.

Thank you for all of your support and for making Sullins Academy a great school.

Last week ten students in grades 4-7 were notified they qualified for the Duke University Talent Search.  Duke Talent Identification Project (TIP) identifies gifted and talented students throughout the Southeast.  Once identified these students will take the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) or the American College Testing exam (ACT).  Those scores may qualify them for residential summer enrichment programs at Duke University.
Students identified at Sullins must have scored 95% or above on last year's Scholastic Achievement Test basic battery.  13% of our third through 6th grade qualified at the 95% level!

Food Drive

Dr. Sykes has set a goal of a TON OF FOOD from Sullins Academy to take to our local food pantry.  This equals almost 10 cans of food per student.  Let's start bringing canned goods and see what a ton of canned food looks like! The barrels in the front lobby are ready for your donations!
The Book Fair Offers Great Reading for Everyone!
The doors open Monday, November 18, at 7:30 a.m.
We hope to see everyone there!

Dear Parents and Families:

Reading is the most important skill you can teach a child. Of all the skills kids learn, it is the one you can influence the most.

We invite you to visit our Scholastic Book Fair and experience a celebration of reading that provides families the opportunity to get involved in a universal mission: encouraging kids to read every day so they can lead better lives.

Our Book Fair is part of a reading event that brings to school a wonderful selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books kids want to read. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose books will motivate them to read more. And like most acquired skills, the more kids practice reading, the better they'll get.

Reading is vital to every child's success, and it's the door opener to the 21st century for all children. Since there will never be a substitute for a parent's direct involvement in his/her child's education, please make plans to visit our Book Fair.

Book Fair Dates:     November 18 - 26, 2013
Shopping Hours:     7:30 - 4:30
Special Events:     Grandparents' Day

We look forward to having you participate in our Fair, and remember, all purchases benefit our school library.

Sincerely,
Dr. Ronald Sykes
Interim Head of School
