Halloween at Sullins;
Children Being Children
It has been years since I dressed up on Halloween. I think I had as much fun as the children as the administrative staff welcomed the trick-or-treaters to the Land of Oz. We live in a cynical world and watch too much T.V. news! Halloween for me, therefore, was an opportunity to watch children enjoy the magic of childhood. The youngest wondered why mommy had dressed them up and why they were marching through all the people. As each grade level progressed down the hall, the magic increased. Children being children - a magical moment.
I want to include special thank-yous to our faculty for dressing up and being children for the day. School is so much more than reading and math instruction. For our students, we adults created childhood memories that they will treasure in old age. What a privilege!
Thanks also to our middle schoolers for their Haunted House Hallway. They transformed the middle school wing into an adventure in all things haunted. Again, for one special day our sixth, seventh and eighth graders quit trying to grow up too fast and simply returned to childhood fun.
With the students, faculty and staff working together, we shared a wonderful Halloween memory. This is an example of why I tell my educator friends that Sullins Academy is the hidden jewel of Virginia's independent schools. Thanks to all!

 EAGLE DAY
Tuesday, November 5, will be our first 'Eagle Day' of the year. Eagle Days are occasions on which Sullins students, in grades 1-8, are encouraged to bring a friend to school. Ideally, the guest will be a peer who is interested in learning more about Sullins. November 5 is Election Day; therefore, the VA public schools are out for the day. If you have referred a neighbor, co-worker, or friend to Sullins Academy, this is the perfect opportunity for a student to experience a day as an Eagle! Dr. Sykes and I will be available to talk with parents, give tours, and our faculty is ready to provide a wonderful day for our guests!
If your child is planning on bringing a friend, please let Becca Powers know by next Friday, November 1, so our teachers can prepare. Thank you! Becca Powers Director of Admissions rpowers@sullinsacademy.org

 Original Works of Art by Your Student and Just in Time for Christmas!!
We are pleased to announce that this fall we will be running the Original Works Program at Sullins Academy. In business since 1989, Original Works is the #1 art based fundraising company in the country, and currently works with thousands of schools and hundreds of thousands of students each year.
Through the Original Works program, each child has the opportunity to have their very own artwork reproduced onto a variety of high quality products. The products range from magnets, mugs and mouse pads, to ceramic tiles, t-shirts, note cards and nearly two dozen other products.
Each child is eligible to participate in this wonderful program. (It is optional for middle school students.) Once the artwork is created, parents and children may select the product(s) on which they would like the artwork to be featured. The program is designed to encourage creativity and student self-esteem. The resulting products make unique gifts that are practical for any season or occasion.
Complete details on the program will be sent home shortly. Proceeds from the program will be used as a SPA fundraiser. For more information on Original Works, please visit their website at www.originalworks.com.

Birthday Book Club News
If you participated in the Birthday Book Club and your child has a May birthday, they will be getting their book in November on their 6 month birthday. I am doing this since we will be getting out of school in May. I didn't want the late May birthdays to have to be rushed with their birthday books. June birthdays will receive books in December, July in January, and August in February.
Thank you to everyone who participated in this activity. I know the children really enjoy getting the recognition of a birthday book on their special day.

 3rd Grade Update
This week in Mrs. Sanders class, students were getting messy with mathematics! Students completed a pumpkin project that had them making predictions and then comparing their predictions to their own measurements. Students worked in groups to predict and then measure the height, circumference, and weight of their pumpkins. Then it was time to predict how many seeds their pumpkin contained, followed by counting the seeds! As an introduction to the concept of division, students had to divide their seeds equally among group members, which led to some rich group discussion. Afterwards it was time to get creative and students decorated their own small pumpkins.
