Faculty/Administration Participation in 2013-14 Annual Giving Campaign

Parent Participation in 2013-14 Annual Giving Campaign to date (16%)

Did you know that this year the middle school is bringing back an old Sullins Academy tradition of Halloween activities complete with a haunted house?

Did you know that the preschool rooms in Martin Hall were the old music practice rooms used by Sullins College students? The rooms were sound-proofed with straw packed into the walls.

Greetings!
Here is your news for Oct. 28 - Nov. 1 at Sullins Academy.

COMING SOON!

The 2013-14 Annual Giving Campaign

The Annual Giving Campaign at Sullins Academy is ready to embark on open water in the hope of bringing home a bountiful catch!  In the past day or two, you should have received the introductory brochure pictured here, illustrating the theme for this year, "Casting our Lines for Valuable Treasure."  In the coming weeks, we will be highlighting our "treasures" at Sullins:

  • Excellence in Teaching

  • Excellence in Learning

  • Excellence in Character, and

  • Thoughtful Giving

Watch for essays from a faculty member entitled, "Why I Decided to Teach at Sullins Academy," and from one of our families on the topic, "Why We Love Sullins Academy."  Some friendly competition among grade levels will also be encouraged, to see which one will have the highest parent participation percentage in annual giving by the Christmas holidays.  (Yes, there will be a reward!!)

Last year, 81% of Sullins families made an Annual Fund or Scholarship Fund contribution - an accomplishment that is AMAZING and RARE among independent schools.  Dr. Sykes is determined to have a repeat performance of that accomplishment and to go at least one percent higher.  With 153 families represented at Sullins, contributions from 126 or more will make Dr. Sykes' goal a reality.

While we approach the Annual Giving Campaign with a lighthearted spirit, its purpose is very serious.  Contributions from parents, grandparents, alumni, friends, and businesses help our school meet its financial obligations each year and, therefore, fulfill its mission.  Without the voluntary gifts from these sources, a Sullins education would be more costly for every family and the unique opportunities available for our students would not be possible.  While we hope that each contributor will consider the great return on investing in Sullins, the size of the gift is determined by each family.  Participation puts our school on the map.  Together, we are stronger in every respect, so make the Annual Giving Campaign a priority for your charitable gifts this year.  (They are tax-deductible!)

HEAD OF SCHOOL SEARCH UPDATE
null

Dear Sullins Community,

The search for a new Head of School at Sullins is progressing as planned. In September, our search consultants from Southern Teachers Agency visited campus to help them understand Sullins' mission, culture, and goals for its next Head of School. Many thanks to Angie Schumaker and Ron Sykes for helping to organize the day. Taking full advantage of our community's generosity and openness, our consultants listened, asked questions, and have come to understand what makes our school unique. The product of this visit is a Position Profile that summarizes Sullins, including performance objectives against which the search committee will evaluate candidates, and spells out the required core competencies and characteristics needed in a new leader. The Position Profile is designed to ensure that our Head of School leadership opportunity is presented and marketed effectively to the most qualified candidates.

While Southern Teachers Agency will be using its extensive networks to build a candidate pool, we also welcome nominations and input from our school community. If you know of someone whom you believe would serve the school well, based on this Position Profile, please contact Mr. Jamie Estes via his email [email protected] so Southern Teachers Agency can follow up on your recommendation.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Senter

Search Committee Chair

EAGLE DAY

Tuesday, November 5, will be our first 'Eagle Day' of the year. Eagle Days are occasions on which Sullins students, in grades 1-8, are encouraged to bring a friend to school. Ideally, the guest will be a peer who is interested in learning more about Sullins. November 5 is Election Day; therefore, the VA public schools are out for the day. If you have referred a neighbor, co-worker, or friend to Sullins Academy, this is the perfect opportunity for a student to experience a day as an Eagle! Dr. Sykes and I will be available to talk with parents, give tours, and our faculty is ready to provide a wonderful day for our guests!

If your child is planning on bringing a friend, please let Becca Powers know by next Friday, November 1, so our teachers can prepare.

Thank you!

Becca Powers

At this point, you will see the books that are checked out, when they are due, and if the book is late.

Click on the LIBRARY BOOK LIST button and you can browse the titles that are available in our library. You will need to click BOOKS and REGULAR and SUBMIT. At this point, an alphabetical listing of titles will show up. You can also check by author. There will be a variety of ways to search for information in this module.

We hope this added feature to RenWeb will be beneficial for you.

Original Works of Art by Your Student and Just in Time for Christmas!!
We are pleased to announce that this fall we will be running the Original Works Program at Sullins Academy.  In business since 1989, Original Works is the #1 art based fundraising company in the country, and currently works with thousands of schools and hundreds of thousands of students each year.
Through the Original Works program, each child has the opportunity to have their very own artwork reproduced onto a variety of high quality products. The products range from magnets, mugs and mouse pads, to ceramic tiles, t-shirts, note cards and nearly two dozen other products.
Each child is eligible to participate in this wonderful program. (It is optional for middle school students.) Once the artwork is created, parents and children may select the product(s) on which they would like the  artwork to be featured. The program is designed to encourage creativity and student self-esteem. The resulting products make unique gifts that are practical for any season or occasion.
Complete details on the program will be sent home shortly. Proceeds from the program will be used as a SPA fundraiser.  For more information on Original Works, please visit their website at www.originalworks.com.
