Did you know that for the past 6 years students who have attended Sullins Academy have been voted by their peers as "Most Likely to Succeed" at Tennessee High School?
Did you know there were rumors at the old Sullins campus on Glenway Avenue that a ghost named Margaret walked the hallways of the upper floors?

8th Grade Photograph To Be Taken
On Tuesday, October 15, 8th grade students will leave immediately following morning arrival for a group photograph to be taken at Bonnie McKenzie's mother's home at 110 Solar Street by Joe Willis of Studio Momenti. The 8th grade photograph is a tradition at Sullins Academy and students should look their best for the picture.
Students are asked to wear their dress uniform for the photo. Girls attire should be the khaki skirt (no pants please), with white knee socks (no hose) and flats along with their white shirts and blazers. Boys attire should be tidy, with belts and ties, white shirts and blazers (no tennis shoes). Students may change into daily dress upon returning to the school.
Currently, we have 2 drivers to transport students for the picture, but we will need a few more. If you are available to help drive, please call Bonnie at 423-817-0948.

Information Regarding Secondary Placement Fair
A Reminder for All Middle School Parents
Monday, October 21, from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. Sullins will be hosting its annual Secondary Placement Fair. During this event in the gymnasium, independent boarding schools from across the north and southeastern regions will have representatives and admissions materials to share with our students and parents. If your family is considering independent high school after your child graduates from Sullins, please come with your questions ready. Below are some links that you may find useful as you begin the exploration process:
Students applying for admission to one of these schools will need to take either the SSAT or the ISEE admission test. (You will need to check with the specific schools to determine which test they require.) Below are the links for the SSAT and ISEE. Please check the dates and locations these tests are being administered and note that you need to register no later than 3 weeks prior to test date.

http://erblearn.org/uploads/media_items/isee-student-guide-final-2013-2014.original.pdf
Additionally, the application process is very thorough. Be aware of application deadlines and whether teacher recommendation forms/ letters are needed. Give our teachers ample time to complete these. Many of the schools use a standard admissions application that you can find on The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS) website.
Explore the TABS website for an overview of boarding schools and other information.
Finally, all of the schools in attendance at the Fair have scholarship and financial aid opportunities, both merit and need-based. The financial aid application is separate from the application process and needs to be completed for each individual school. Do not doubt your eligibility; most independent schools will work with you and try to make attendance possible if your child is a good fit. Information about the application process can be found on the TABS site or through NAIS School and Students Services. http://sssbynais.org/parents
We wish all of our graduates success after they leave our halls, whether attending boarding school or one of the area high schools!

Sullins Academy
Board of Directors Update
The Sullins Academy Board of Directors held its usual monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 17. After the call to order, the board heard a presentation from SPA President Melissa Steward on SPA plans for the year. The board also heard reports from the following committees: Advancement, Finance, Academic Affairs and Search. Dr. Ron Sykes presented the Head of School report to the board. The board approved the proposed 2013-2014 budget.
The board noted that parent directories and handbooks were distributed in September. Contained in the handbook is a section detailing the ability to communicate and request a meeting with the board. Those forms are available from the school office and should be completed and submitted to the Chairman of the Board.
Finally, the board is still eager to add qualified members to the following committees that report to the board:
-Advancement (admissions, development, marketing) -Audit -Finance -Investments -Building and Grounds
Please contact Courtney Cavatoni at ccavatoni@me.com to express interest in one of these committees.

News from the Library for Kindergarten through Third Grade
On Monday, October 28, 2013, at 12:30, the children's book author David M. Sargent, Jr., will visit with K-3 students. Sargent will enlist the help of his four canine friends who are the characters in his Doggie Tails series for this presentation. During the assembly, Sargent will encourage the students to try story writing themselves. The students will be able to make purchases from the many books he has written and talk with the author. He will be happy to sign those purchases.
Please feel free to join your child for this program in the gymnasium if you wish. Mr. Sargent will be available in the library for the book signings.

Theme Basket Tickets will go on sale October 21.
Winning tickets will be drawn on November 1.
Theme Basket Raffle FAQ's
-
What is the Theme Basket Raffle?
It is a fundraiser for the SPA. It is usually held twice each school year, in the fall and the spring. Often in the fall, it is held as a part of a larger fundraiser such as a dinner auction or talent show/chili cook-off.
-
How does it work?
Baskets are donated by families and friends of Sullins Academy. They are on display in the center hall for two weeks. Students can purchase raffle tickets, put their names on the back of the tickets, and put them in the numbered box for the basket they are hoping to win. Names are drawn on the last morning after the ticket sales close and winners are announced with the afternoon announcements before school lets out at 3 PM. Students may pick up their baskets before waiting in the pick-up line.
-
How to buy tickets?
There are two ways to buy tickets. Ticket order forms will go home in one or two Friday folders. Parents may fill out forms and send them back in with their child. There is the option to send in payment for tickets or have them charged to their Sullins account. Tickets will be delivered to your child's classroom in a sealed envelope. There will also be a ticket sales table in the center hall of the school each morning while baskets are on display. There must be a parent signature on the "charge to account" form for a child to charge tickets in the mornings. Tickets are $2 each or 12 for $20.
-
How to enter the raffle?
Each basket will have a number and a name on it. There will be a ticket box beside it that will have the same name and number. REMEMBER TO PUT FIRST AND LAST NAMES ON THE BACK OF EACH TICKET! Put tickets in the box of the basket you wish to win. Tickets may be placed in raffle boxes each morning or after school. Please do not disrupt class time to put tickets in boxes during the school day.
-
What kinds of theme baskets are suggested for donation?
This is your chance to be creative! Themes can by any kind of safe, kid appropriate subjects. Examples are: Lego, Batman, Barbie, board games, or art themes for elementary ages. Suggestions for middle school ages are: iTunes, headphones, bath & body, gift cards, and movie night themes. A single, large item does not have to be in a basket. Adult theme baskets are occasionally donated, like Starbucks, for example. These are fun and generate parent interest, though they need to be within the theme guidelines. (See Theme Basket Guidelines in RenWeb or click the link above.)
-
Where do I deliver my basket donation?
Please drop off your basket at the school conference room any time before the tickets go on sale. *Please complete a "Basket Donation Form" and attach it to your basket when dropping it off at the school. This form is important for you to receive gift-in-kind credit for your tax records.
Fall 2013 Basket Raffle Dates:
October 14-18th: Baskets delivered to the school
October 21st- November 1st: Baskets on display and tickets on sale until 8:30 AM Nov 1st.
November 1st: Drawing for baskets 8:30 AM. Announcement of winners at 3:00 PM.
