October Service Project - "Cupcakes for a Cure"
Cupcakes for a Cure raises money for cancer research and awareness by sponsoring a fundraiser during select months of the school year. During those months, we sell cupcakes at lunch for $1.00 to support research on different types of cancers. On these days, all students are allowed to wear a shirt that represents the color of a particular type of cancer, along with their khakis. The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness month so we will wear pink and sell pink cupcakes. The date for the first cupcake sales will be announced soon, so be on the look-out for that in an upcoming newsletter. I will also be having sign-ups next week for those middle school students who are interested in being part of this awesome effort.

 Cross Country Update
On Saturday, October 28th, our cross country team participated in the Bristol Cross meet. It was a hot day at Steele Creek, but our runners ran hard. Our first girl home was Haley Manno, with a time of 16:17. There were 238 girls in the race and Haley's time was the 78th fastest. In the boys race, Matthew Dean placed 43rd out of 234 runners. His time was 13:39.
Last night, our team competed in the Randy Smith Classic at Sugar Hollow. This is the most grueling meet on our schedule. Claire Melton finished with an amazing time of 14:40, landing her in 27th place out of 85 runners. Matthew Dean came home 31st out of 119 runners with a fantastic time of 12:58. Andrew Robinette ran a great race with a time of 14:06 and placed 52nd.
I am so proud of our runners! Our next meet is at Daniel Boone High School on October 12th.

Sullins Loves Grandparents!
In addition to enthusiastic students and dedicated parents, Sullins Academy is blessed with supportive grandparents who attend programs, encourage their grandchildren, and help when asked. To recognize this special relationship, Sullins has celebrated "Grandparents' Day" for many years. This celebration occurs just before the Thanksgiving break, when out of town relatives may be visiting this area.
To provide an opportunity for grandparents (and other relatives or "grand" friends) to visit the classrooms and spend some quality time at school, the Sullins Parents Association's Hospitality Committee has planned a breakfast for Monday, November 25, beginning at 8:30 a.m. On Tuesday, November 26, Mrs. Looney will present a musical program for grandparents, featuring Sullins students. At the conclusion of the program, students will be dismissed to begin the Thanksgiving holiday.
In order to invite grandparents, aunts and uncles, or "grand" friends to join us for these two days, we need your help in providing mailing addresses and email addresses as soon as possible. A flier is enclosed in today's Friday Folder for this purpose. Please fill it out and return it to your student's teacher or advisor by October 11. If you have given us addresses in the past, please do so again so we can be sure our records are correct. If you are a new Sullins family, we want to include your child's grandparents in this tradition. Thank you for your assistance!

Girls Inc
Thank You, thank you, thank you! It is so humbling to be a part of such a giving school.
The Middle School Student Council helped gather and load the Girls Inc. items that you
donated on Wednesday, and Tammy Nichols and I delivered a truck load to a very grateful staff at Girls Inc. As always, they were thankful for your generosity. Please remember that the Sullins community service projects are not just about purchasing an item, but teaching our children to think beyond themselves. So, take your child to shop for the donation and spend a moment reminding them that it is important for us to help one another and to give back to our community whenever we have the opportunity.
"I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver." --Maya Angelou

"Coats for Kids"
King University Now Collecting
King University is now collecting children's winter coats for the College's 14th annual "Coats for Kids" Day which will take place on Saturday, Oct. 26.
"Over the past 13 years the Bristol community has united in support of 'Coats for Kids.' King University was able to provide coats for 100 area children last year. We are making every attempt to exceed that number this year. Our hope is that every child in our region who needs a coat - has one."
- Donated children's coats may be dropped off at King University and any Bristol, Tenn., or Bristol, Va., elementary school, along with Vance Middle School, Tennessee High School, Sullins Academy, or Craig's Cleaners located at 1375 Volunteer Parkway #12, Bristol, Tenn.
- Monetary donations designated for "Coats for Kids" will be accepted at King University's administration building located on the Bristol campus.
King University student volunteers will greet families and help youth select winter coats in Kline Gym Saturday, Oct. 26 from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The Education Department's student organization, STEA-KE (Student Tennessee Education Association - King University), will provide carnival games and face painting. Several area agencies and organizations will provide information about their programs and services while offering entertainment for the children.
The deadline to drop off coats to Sullins or the locations in Bristol TN/VA is Oct. 15; however, coats may be dropped off at King University or Craig's Cleaners up to Oct. 24. For more information, contact Julie Roberson at 423.652.6310 or jarobers@king.edu.

It's That Time of Year Again!!
Theme Basket Tickets will go on sale October 21.
Winning tickets will be drawn on November 1.
Theme Basket Raffle FAQ's
-
What is the Theme Basket Raffle?
It is a fundraiser for the SPA. It is usually held twice each school year, in the fall and the spring. Often in the fall, it is held as a part of a larger fundraiser such as a dinner auction or talent show/chili cook-off.
-
How does it work?
Baskets are donated by families and friends of Sullins Academy. They are on display in the center hall for two weeks. Students can purchase raffle tickets, put their names on the back of the tickets, and put them in the numbered box for the basket they are hoping to win. Names are drawn on the last morning after the ticket sales close and winners are announced with the afternoon announcements before school lets out at 3 PM. Students may pick up their baskets before waiting in the pick-up line.
-
How to buy tickets?
There are two ways to buy tickets. Ticket order forms will go home in one or two Friday folders. Parents may fill out forms and send them back in with their child. There is the option to send in payment for tickets or have them charged to their Sullins account. Tickets will be delivered to your child's classroom in a sealed envelope. There will also be a ticket sales table in the center hall of the school each morning while baskets are on display. There must be a parent signature on the "charge to account" form for a child to charge tickets in the mornings. Tickets are $2 each or 12 for $20.
-
How to enter the raffle?
Each basket will have a number and a name on it. There will be a ticket box beside it that will have the same name and number. REMEMBER TO PUT FIRST AND LAST NAMES ON THE BACK OF EACH TICKET! Put tickets in the box of the basket you wish to win. Tickets may be placed in raffle boxes each morning or after school. Please do not disrupt class time to put tickets in boxes during the school day.
-
What kinds of theme baskets are suggested for donation?
This is your chance to be creative! Themes can by any kind of safe, kid appropriate subjects. Examples are: Lego, Batman, Barbie, board games, or art themes for elementary ages. Suggestions for middle school ages are: iTunes, headphones, bath & body, gift cards, and movie night themes. A single, large item does not have to be in a basket. Adult theme baskets are occasionally donated, like Starbucks, for example. These are fun and generate parent interest, though they need to be within the theme guidelines. (See Theme Basket Guidelines in RenWeb or click the link above.)
-
Where do I deliver my basket donation?
Please drop off your basket at the school conference room any time before the tickets go on sale. *Please complete a "Basket Donation Form" and attach it to your basket when dropping it off at the school. This form is important for you to receive gift-in-kind credit for your tax records.
Fall 2013 Basket Raffle Dates:
October 14-18th: Baskets delivered to the school
October 21st- November 1st: Baskets on display and tickets on sale until 8:30 AM Nov 1st.
November 1st: Drawing for baskets 8:30 AM. Announcement of winners at 3:00 PM.
