Tai Chi For Seniors

Tai Chi is the world's  most popular form of exercise. Millions of people learn and practice it to gain a more active life through relaxed movement and alert minds.  Deep breathing and slow stretching develops better balance and coordination, more leg strength, and increased energy. Twenty minute practice sessions several times a week are recommended.

Qigong, also called Tai Chi is recognized by the United States National Institutes of Health Office of Alternative Medicine as an important method of Alternative Health Care.

Over 75% of traditional medical schools in the United States have courses in natural, complimentary medicine.  Some schools, including Harvard Medical School,  have ongoing research projects focused on Tai Chi to assess the benefits of this style of exercise.

People between ages sixty and eighty may find that the reduced risk of falls to be strong motivation to embark upon a well-explained program that takes the mystery out of learning Tai Chi.  Mark Johnson has several videos demonstrating his approach with seniors.  An introductory video which sells for $25.00 can be ordered at www.taichiforseniorsvideo.com     or  Mark Johnson 801 Tupper St #1111 Santa Rosa, CA 95404.

The Luxury of Meditative Walking Exercise in the Labyrinth

The practice of labyrinth walking integrates the body with the mind and the mind with the spirit.  Walking one path that winds in a circuitous way to the center and back out to the edge of the labyrinth creates a metaphor of meaningful life through meditation and prayer.

The following list of abundant blessings and benefits available to us as we walk the labyrinth should encourage us to look for a labyrinth in our communities:

A relaxed body and a quiet mind (stress reduction)

Balance in our lives (restoration of health and happiness)

Insight (turning toward the unknown, the mysterious)

   Self-reflection(with heightened community awareness)

Discovery of innovation-intuition (hearing the inner voice)

   Celebration (play)

Taken from ancient Pali scriptures, "mette" translates into English as loving kindness.  Today it is used to refer to meditation based on the recitation of specific phrases directed first at oneself, then gradually extending to other people in the community and finally offered at all people across the globe.
Practicing "metta" seeks to create a warm feeling within as well as enhancing our capacity for benevolence and compassion.  As time passes and practice develops into a discipline the results are a sense of deep contentment and a renewed appreciation of other people.
