Dear Members and Friends,

The Global Watch Index is compiled by HelpAge International, a London-based non-profit with affiliates in 65 countries.  Its mission is to help older people challenge discrimination, understand and overcome financial obstacles, and lead secure, active lives.  HelpAge launched the Index in 2013.

According to HelpAge, there are now about 868 million people in the world over 60 years old.  That is approximately 12% of the global population.  By 2050, the number of people over 60 will rise to 2.02 billion.  In some countries the number of people over sixty will make up 30% of the population.

There are thirteen indicators measured in the Index.  Life expectancy as well as access to pension plans and amenities like pubic transit comprise the index for each country.  HelpAge reports that the countries in the Index have 90% of the world's 60-plus population.

Norway leads the Index for well-being of the elderly.  Sweden, Canada and Germany rank next.  The United States was eighth, Japan was ninth.  Russia and India were 65th and 69th respectively.  China ranked forty-eighth.

The Index discusses the efforts of many countries to establish ways of coping with the increases in the elderly population.  Of special note are Latin American countries who are directly supporting older people through pension programs to enable them to remain active and self-sufficient.

HelpAge released the 2014 Index to coincide with the United Nations International Day of Older Persons and urged governments to move faster to extend planning and initiatives as the number of their elderly citizens grows.

         Por Favor

a vignette by J. Duvanier Lucil

Bounteous Nature, with your clues
Fashioned so our two-and-twos
Keep us at sixes and sevens...
Tell us of your private heaven.
Answer do! forego your poses,
Free the sweet lips of your roses,
Doff at once that stupid muzzle;
Solve for us, you fool, the puzzle.

The monthly newsletters don't focus on fund raising for At Sixes and Sevens, Inc.  The outreach to people aged sixty to eighty is mainly the sharing of ideas.  The goal is to build a foundation of community for people with vision and energy to live healthy, active lives in maturity.  Empowerment comes from sharing experiences and activities that may bring benefit to all of us.  This is at the heart of what we do at sixes and sevens.  Our projects offer people a chance to be part of a commitment to wellness and longevity.
Our mission however must be financed in the traditional non-profit way.  Donors invest because they believe in our capacity and ability to meet our goals.  Donors have a personal or social motivation to contribute to our work.

Walking Labyrinths around the world for vision and emotional knowledge

Bringing Life to the Labyrinth invites those who want a more profound understanding of this 4,000-year-old symbol to open their hearts, minds, and bodies to the new consciousness that walking the labyrinth brings.

The labyrinth is a walking meditation tool, the uses of which are as limitless as the human imagination.  This comprehensive guide to modern labyrinths is a companion for individuals and groups to enhance their spiritual, personal, and professional growth.  It explores and explains the labyrinth's power, encourages the practice of walking the labyrinth for benefits above and beyond regular exercise and meditation, and points to its mystical aspects available to experience.
