Your Equine Spring Checklist

Spring is the time of year we feel rejuvenated after those long, winter months.  Here is a checklist that will give you a jump start to tackle your barn projects.

BARN & FARM

Start from the top and work your way down.

Check Roof, Gutters & Downspouts on your Barn

Check for loose or damaged shingles or metal and also check for leaks.

Remove leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts that would cause blockages.  Tip:  Place a muck tub or wheelbarrow underneath where you are working to drop debris.

Check Doors & Windows

Wipe down doors & windows and clean around these areas. Check to make sure hinges and latches are in proper working order. Lubricate hinges, latches, locks, springs & rollers.

Clean Rafters & Cobwebs in your Barn
Make sure your horses are out of the barn before cleaning the rafters.  Open all doors for proper ventilation and remove dust from your rafters with a broom or blower.  You may also want to invest in a wet/dry vacuum to remove the fine dust. Let the dust settle then start removing those cobwebs.

Clean  Stalls
Wipe down stall walls. Check for loose, split boards and repair or replace as needed. Remove bedding from stalls and check to make sure floor is dry & level. If you use rubber matting, straighten & level as needed. Scrub feeders, buckets, troughs, toys, etc. and also check for any sharp edges and fix as needed.  If you use fans, clean and inspect them to make sure they are working properly.
Tip: Clean your grillwork with a Swiffer - this is a handy tool to use year round!

Walk your Fence Line
Check for loose posts, broken rails and any protruding nails or fasteners and repair as needed. Check gates and latches. Lubricate, repair and replace where needed.

Service Equipment
Check fluids, batteries and tires on tractors and other farm equipment.
HORSE & RIDER
Spring is the time to clean out and re-organize your storage areas. Wipe down cabinets, any shelving & floors.

Clean Out Tack Room & Other Storage Areas

Clean your Tack (saddles, cinches, bridles, etc.) and check for wear & tear. Repair as needed. If you have any unused items, consider donating those items to a local Horse Rescue or 4H Club.

Clean up any debris that may have accumulated in areas over the winter months.

Check Horse Supplies & Grooming Items

Go through your horse care products and first aid items.  Discard any outdated items and replenish as necessary.

Check your supplements & salt supplies. Restock as needed.

Clean brushes & other grooming items.

Clean & prepare your fly sheets and masks for the upcoming season.

Send those winter Blankets out to be cleaned and then store them in plastic containers.
