Our Hubbard Woods Decade Study Is Off and Running!
The celebration of HW's 100th birthday continues as students dive into the Decades Project! A huge thank you to the teachers and decade parents who have been spending time helping the kids explore their classroom's assigned decade and posting the results on the bulletin boards. The Sept/Oct theme covered Hubbard Woods and Winnetka, so the kids have been enjoying learning what life was like at school and in their town from 1915 until today!
As the classrooms continue their exploration, they may visit with former students. Friday, October 9, Ms. Kerouac's third-grade class hosted HW alum, Don Fawcett, class of 1973. Mr. Fawcett brought "artifacts" from his time at HW and shared fun facts that blew the students away, including:
- Misbehaving students had to put pennies in a penny jar or go jump rope!
- The RC used to be the gym and a climbing rope hung from the beams!
- Kids each had individual desks - no tables or grouped seating!
Over the next five months students will think about historic events, sports, science/technology, entertainment and lifestyle for their assigned decade. All of the photos, artifacts, stories and information gathered through the Decades Project will be showcased at an all-school open house May 3 to celebrate the Hubbard Woods 100 year anniversary.

Jackson Pollock Collaboration
Over the summer, Mrs. Mac and I talked about how we might collaborate and integrate technology and art as part of our STEAM pilot in the IDEA Lab. One of my favorite artists is Jackson Pollock; I love how he re-imagined how artists and viewers interact with his paintings.
Head on over to our blog: A Zen Librarian to learn more about this collaboration!
