Mrs. McMillan Featured In
The Chicago Tribune!
Congratulations to our own Phyllis McMillan on her feature in last week's local Chicago Tribune. The Tribune picked up the story of Mrs. McMillan's exceptional 47 year teaching career after hearing about the Hubbard Woods book collection dedicated in her honor. To read the full Tribune article click here

If you would like to make a donation to purchase a book for The Phyllis McMillan Book Collection, which is housed in the Hubbard Woods Resource Center, please click hereFor a $20 donation, a children's book will be purchased and inscribed with your name and a brief message for Mrs. McMillan. A ZEN LIBRARIAN - by Todd Burleson

Welcome to the first of a regular column from the Hubbard

Woods Resource Center and its director Todd Burleson.

Each month I will alternate between discussing technology and texts.

This month, I want to explore the thinking and research around teaching keyboarding. As our students become increasingly more 'connected,' fluency is the objective. Just as students need to know how to effectively write without struggling to know how to make each letter, they also must know how to type without hunting for each individual character. Here is a link to an article I posted on our A Zen Librarian Blog. I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Next month I'll be discussing non-fiction and its new importance as the Common Core amps up the amount of this type of reading. Also, Parents, take a look at our Hubbard Woods Resource Center Web Page. Over on the left side of the page are three tabs: For Students; For Teachers; For Parents. Check out the resources there for both you an your children.
