Greetings From The HWS Environmental PTO Committee!
We are all about reducing, reusing, and recycling at Hubbard Woods and taking these habits home and into our community at large.
Some of our initiatives include:
- Composting in the lunchroom, the faculty lounge, and a growing number of classrooms. (HWS is a founding member of We Compost!, a program that promotes composting)
- Increasing awareness of and access to "regular" commingled Recycling opportunities for cardboard, paper, hard plastic bottles and containers, glass, and aluminum cans and foil.
- Arranging "Special" Collections during the year for plastic bags, Capri Sun juice pouches, and other such items.
- Advocating use of Reusables instead of single-use disposables for school and PTO programs and events.
- Party Packs and reusable plateware for classroom snacks and class parties
- Trash-Free Tuesdays
- Walk-to-School Wednesdays
- No Idling campaign to limit our children's exposure to exhaust fumes emitted by cars.
- Supporting our HWS extracurricular Student Green Team and faculty advisor Kate Edwards.
- Working with the District 36 Green Team to coordinate consistent, sustainable initiatives across all our schools
More information on all these initiatives is or will be available on the PTO Website. Please contact Liz Kunkle at liz.kunkle@gmail.com for more information or to become a member of our committee.

"All Joy And No Fun: The Paradox of Modern Parenthood," Friday, September 19, 7:00 PM,
New Trier School, Northfield Campus, Cornog Auditorium, 7 Happ Road, Northfield
New Trier High School D203, the New Trier Parents' Association and The Family Action Network (FAN) present Jennifer Senior, author of New York Times bestseller All Joy and No Fun: The Paradox of Modern Parenthood. Unlike many parenting books on the market that focus on the effects of parents on children, Senior's book takes an ethnographic approach, documenting the effects that children have on their parents' lives - their marriages, jobs, friendships, lifestyles, and mental health. She guides parents in seeing that their challenges, which they often assume are of their own making, are in fact part of a much larger socio-economic-cultural picture.
