 Last Call for Apple Nominations
DCEF is encouraging the community to submit their nominations for outstanding teachers, principals, and school employees for the 2016 Apple Awards.
According to DCEF Executive Director, Jason Christensen, over 3,000 nominations had been received with a week left. "We've had a very nice response across the board - between the elementary, middle, and high schools and also by the feeder areas. We want to make sure no one is overlooked, so I would encourage the community to take a moment to show their support and appreciation for their teachers," said Christensen. Nominations will close on Sunday, October 4th at 11:59 p.m.
The 11th Annual Apple Awards will take place on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at the Sheraton Downtown Denver and is expected to host over 900 honorees and guests. For more information, contact DCEF at 303.387.0505. |
Carol Stulz to Retire Oct. 16
DC EF staff member Carol Stulz is retiring from the Foundation in mid-October, after 16 1/2 years of dedicated work with the organization. Since 1999, Carol has been involved in the Foundation's programs - from "Greg and Steve" concerts in the '90s, to a decade's worth of golf tournaments. In recent years, she led the annual school supply drive as it went from an DCEF-based program to one with 30 community partners, raising funds to supply 1,000 students with school supplies. Carol's friendly face and voice have greeted Chapter leaders as they pick up a credit card machine (or long ago, a popcorn machine) and signed in countless guests at DCEF the Apple Awards. We wish her well in her retirement and future travels!

World Compass Academy PTO Raises $12K+
One of the DCEF's newest chapters, the World Compass Academy PTO has found immediate success in their fundraising efforts. Using the Foundation's access to the online fundraising site "Colorado Gives," the WCA PTO created an online pledge drive to raise funds to provide playground equipment for the school. After setting up the pledge drive a link was sent home to parents, encouraging them to give what they felt appropriate. A $10,000 goal was quickly met and the group has raised $12,822 to date, with two days left in the pledge drive. Commented WCA PTO Treasurer, Lisa Beerbower, "We are thankful for this new opportunity and for the wonderful families that have made and will continue to make WCA an amazing institution for our children!"

Volunteers Needed for 8th Grade Expo Nov. 5 and Nov. 10
The success of this DCEF sponsored event is largely due to the volunteers who help with event logistics. There are two opportunities available: THURSDAY, 11/5 (9am-2pm): Come for an hour or two during this "all day" prep period. Help stuff 5,000 bags for student use at the Expo and deliver them to our schools.
TUESDAY, 11/10: Expo Day Volunteers! While your exact duty will be assigned upon arrival, you may find yourself helping with student entry or exit from the event, passing out water or lunch to our employers, or monitoring an exit door. Times: The AM shift is 7:45am - 11am.
The location for both is at the DC Fairgrounds in Castle Rock. More information and a link to the Sign Up Genius can be found here.

For Treasurers
Many of you have recently had, or are getting ready to have, your fall fundraiser. Just a reminder that for all donations of $250 or more, the IRS requires a donor acknowledgement letter be sent to the donor by the recipient. The letter should indicate whether any goods or services were provided in exchange for their donation, and if so, what the fair market value of that item is. Keep in mind that the $250 threshold is an annually cumulative one, so you will want keep good records of donations received throughout the calendar year. The Foundation recommends that a donor acknowledgment letter go out to all donors in the form of a thank you letter for all gifts received, regardless of amount, which ensures you meet this requirement. Plus, it is just good practice to thank your donors! For a sample letter, visit our website.
