Career Connect Ignites Passion
|
 | | The Larkspur Fire Protection District hosted a dozen student in the Career Connect program this April for a two-week, hands on program called "Fire Fighting: A Career, Not a Job." |
"My time at Schomp BMW was truly an awesome experience and it helped me learn a lot so perhaps in the future I can continue my passion for the automotive field." said Michael Key, a junior at Ponderosa. Key is one of more than 130 students who participated in Career Connect this Spring.
The Spring Career Connect Program featured 23 different programs with a diverse list of Douglas County employers including the Larkspur Fire Department, DirecTV's Castle Rock Broadcast Facility and a pair of companies from the automotive industry. Employers partnered with DCEF to create a hands-on learning experience for students. The programs introduced students to different aspects of careers in a variety of industries.
Madisyn Kirby, a junior at Douglas County High School, attended a program hosted by the Douglas County Office of Planning and Sustainable Development. "I never even knew that a "planner" was a job!" commented Kirby. "The activity that they had for us was a huge map of each of our high schools and we got to plan out everything that we would want to change or add. I have a meeting set up now to meet with my principal. I will bring my poster in and explain it all." she said.
Next Fall, Career Connect will host the second annual 8th Grade Expo, a district-wide career fair for middle school students. More than 75 employers are expected to participate on November 13 at the Douglas County Event Center.

Stars 4 Douglas County recently announced $6,000 in scholarships and grants to DCSD schools, students, and teachers. Stars 4 Douglas County, a chapter of the Douglas County Educational Foundation (DCEF), is dedicated to the support of visual arts in public education for Douglas County youth. In total, three high school seniors, three art teachers, and two schools received funding which will allow them to respectively pursue college educations, purchase additional classroom supplies, and expand art related programming in the school.
"We couldn't be more pleased to make these awards. The grant applications were very compelling and well thought out. The jurors had an especially difficult time deciding on the student scholarship winners, which were very dynamic. For those teachers and schools who weren't awarded a grant this year, we heartily encourage you to apply next year. This was our first year and we expect to be able to make more awards in our upcoming season. Special thanks to those community members, that donated their time to be on the 2013 Star Selection Committee," said Stars 4 Douglas County Founder and Executive Director Julie Holladay.
Three DCSD graduating seniors, Caroline Ray (Douglas County High School), Jenna McMullins (Castle View High School) and Rebecca Houser (Douglas County High School) received $1,000 scholarships. Three DCSD teachers, Kim DArthenay, Pamela Cogburn and Dianne Boice, each received $1,000 toward their visual art program. Coyote Creek Elementary and Douglas County High School were named "Star Select Schools", and will receive 25% of the 2013 gala proceeds towards their visual art programs.
