Goalie's Corner

Julia Evans plays Goalie for Dakota U12C and started playing goalin 2013/14.  We interviewed Julia's coaches:

Q:  What makes Julia a great Goalie?

A:  Julia is fearless. She isn't afraid of the ring, even when the coaches shoot on her! Julia is also quick. For not having been a goalie very long, she has learned the moves and does an awesome job applying them when she plays.

Q:  How has Julia helped your team this year?

A:  Julia has a good spirit. Before the games she tries her best to pump all the girls up. She also helps the team by communicating with the coaches and players; if something on the ice needs to change, she will let the coaches or players know.

Q:  What do you think is the hardest thing for goalies?

A:  I believe the hardest thing would be maintaining confidence, courage and determination. As well, it can definitely be hard dealing with a loss, but the goalie should never think it is their fault. Goalies also need to remember that they cannot stop ALL the goals!

Q:  How do coaches help goalies and how have you helped Julia?

A:  By providing support.  Most goalies have natural instincts that are probably what drove them to be goalies in the first place.  A coach helps support and build off of those instincts.    Since Julia is just starting out as a goalie, I have really focused on confidence this year. In just a short amount of time, I've seen her confidence grow significantly! I also work one-on-one with her every practice and do all sorts of different drills that focus on her strengths and weaknesses.

Q:  What advice would you give to other girls wanting to try the Goalie position?

A:  It's a one-of-a-kind position. Why not try it?! Go into it with a positive attitude and tell yourself it is going to be fun and a good challenge for you! Also, don't get down on yourself and don't give up right away if things aren't going well.

Q:  What is Julia's greatest Goalie moment?

A:  A playoff game last year against Oxford Heights.  We hadn't beaten them all season, but Julia changed that by stealing the game with an incredible performance.  It's truly amazing to see a goalie realize that they can help control the outcome of a game.
