Team Canada - Senior National Team
and the
2014 World Ringette Championships
Manitoba had four athletes selected to Team Canada's Senior National Team. We are very proud of Amy Clarkson, Ainsley Ferguson, Andrea Ferguson and Lindsay Burns. These High Performance athletes persevered through an initial selection camp followed by four additional training camps in preparation for the World Championships.
The World Championships were held in North Bay, Ontario December 29, 2014 to January 4, 2014, where Canada lost to Finland to capture the Silver medal. Our athletes represented our country and our province with pride and were great ambassadors on a World stage. We congratulate them and are extremely proud of their accomplishments.
These four athletes in partnership with the MRA are committed to participate in promotional activities to help promote our sport. These activities can include player clinics, promotional appearances, event appearances, etc. One of the activities these four athletes will be attending is the Ringette 4U Jamboree scheduled for Sunday March 22nd. , 2014 at Glenwood Arena.
Local Associations wishing to have a Team Canada athlete appear at a player clinic be part of a promotional or event appearance must make a written request to the MRA outlining the date, location and specifics of the event. The MRA will evaluate each request, and if ok, approve the request. We then contact the Team Canada athlete to determine their availability and once this has been confirmed (athlete availability and event) the office will provide the event organizers with the athlete contact information.
This project is a great opportunity for our Local Associations to involve our National Team athletes in events occurring at the grassroots level. And what a great chance for young athletes to be in the company of these Team Canada players!

Where AA ringette fits into the MRA.
Some people in the Manitoba ringette community are unclear where AA ringette fits in the overall program.
The MRA mission statement says that the MRA is to offer playing opportunities for players of all ages and all skill levels.
Sport Manitoba expects and requires that the Manitoba Ringette Association participate in elite interprovincial competition as one of its obligations for funding. Ringette Canada has a similar requirement and expectation although Ringette Canada does not provide any funding. If conducting an elite program is a requirement, it makes sense to do it well. There needs to be overall direction for this program and it falls to the MRA to assume this role. Thus, the MRA has a High Performance program, part of which is the AA league.
Although not everyone in Manitoba ringette participates in AA, it is essential that this component of the program is run. By analogy, not everyone in Manitoba takes post-secondary training. Yet, it does make sense for us as a province and a society to ensure that higher level education is done well and is available for appropriate individuals. So, AA ringette is important to our sport and should be supported by all, even those who are not part of it. |

November 9th Ringette Canada Roadshow Stop
The 50th Anniversary Ringette Canada Roadshow stop was an outstanding success. We had a number of on ice and off ice events planned at the MTS Iceplex that started at 9:00 am and continued on all day.
The on ice day started with a U12 Skills competition where we had 24 players (6 teams consisting of a goalie and three skaters) competing in four individual skill events including agility, fastest skater, hardest shot and for the goalies, a combination of most saves plus accurate throws to targets. The entire team, including goalies, participated in a relay race at the end. At 10:30 we had the Ringette 4U participants out demonstrating how fun Ringette is and how innovative this new, "made in Manitoba" program has become.
Our feature game, Manitoba's own Canada Winter Games squad against the "Toba All Stars". This game was a nail biter, tied at 6-6 until the last two minutes when "Toba All Stars" scored to win 7-6. The feature game was followed by two more skills competitions at U10 and U14 which both followed the same format as the U12 Skills earlier in the day. In all, we had 100 participants in the skills that were selected randomly from over 245 online entries.
We had large number of friends, family and teammates out for support as well. The MTS Iceplex was overtaken by Ringette!!
All players participating in the skills competition received a special edition Manitoba Ringette 50th jersey. And our young fans did not go home empty handed, the mascots handed out MRA 50th tote bags to all kids they could find. Also all athletes who took part in the skills competition will be entered for a chance to win a trip to the 2014 Ringette All Star Weekend to participate in the All Star Skills Event alongside participants from across the country. Two winners will be announced from each province.
We had some great exposure from the media with CTV doing a feature on the event and CBC Radio also coming out. Of course the day could not be the success it was without the many volunteers that worked countless hours leading up to the event and on the day of the event. Show your appreciation next time you see a volunteer at a tournament or other Ringette event and take the time to thank them for their contribution.
