Presidents Message - Facebook Generation
On October 17th, I attended a workshop by Sport Manitoba on Physical Literacy. This was a very informative presentation with significant dovetailing to LTAD. Just as we recognize the stages of literacy in terms of reading and writing, there are different stages for physical literacy. We know that as humans, we need to learn how to roll over before we can crawl, we need to learn how to walk before we run. But learning to run or to write doesn't mean we are ready to compete in a marathon or create a novel. Many years of developing the basics and educating ourselves to expand upon these basic skills is essential. As we move forward, it is the goal of MRA to assist athletes in developing their own physical literacy to the best of their abilities. One of our biggest tools to achieve this is Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD). Stay tuned as we announce roll out plans throughout the season.
The workshop also highlighted something else. It was interesting to learn that 2010 was the first year in almost 100 years, that life expectancy has gone down. This means that children born in 2010 have a shorter life expectancy than those born in 2009. The reason why is inactivity and obesity.
Modern medicines and science have helped us in controlling disease. Now it is lifestyle that is the major factor that controls longevity. Technology, while assisting us in our daily lives, has become a contributor to an inactive lifestyle. The current generation of children is being dubbed the "Facebook Generation".
The workshop highlighted the need for sport to become an instrument for healthy living. Retention of players and promoting sport for life is a primary focus for the MRA.
Yours in Ringette,
Don Kozun

AA Players Give Back
The MRA has implemented a new policy this year where U16 and U19 AA players must attempt to give back 5 hours per registered girl. Any team receiving/requesting aid must have in excess of 50% of the players on said team participate in this program. Preference will be given to the Provincial Champion at U16 & U19 for financial aid. These 5 hours could be in the form of coaching, instructing and assisting with MRA sanctioned events.
All WRL teams in need of some assistance are encouraged to contact your local AA association to check on availability of your AA players in your catchment area.
AA teams and individuals can download the "Give Back" form to fill out and submit from the MRA site under the AA section or by clicking here on Give Back Form. |

Canada Winter Games Athlete Identification Registration Process The Canada Winter Games Team 'Toba formation process has begun. Our 2015 entry is planned to be chosen in the late spring, early summer of 2014.
A series of athlete identification camps and tryouts will take place through the year from May 2013 to May 2014. In order to be invited to these camps, interested players must register through this link. All players registered will be scouted during the current season to determine if they will be invited to join the identification and tryout camps. The number of invitees has not been determined ahead of the scouting process. There is no cost associated with registering your interest to be scouted.
