Gratitude and Hope: A Father's Visitation Story
I came to the Family Bridges Program at Pendleton Place about 16 months ago. It wasn't a very happy occasion but it was the only option the court was offering me to see my two young children who I love very much.
So at first it was hard and humbling to go into an environment where I was searched and visitations were monitored. I understood that this was for the families' safety and children's' well-being, but it did not make it easier.
I was impressed on day one with the caring staff from the supervisor to the case manager to the visit monitors. They were professional and did their best to make us comfortable in a difficult situation. As time passed, our visits developed into some therapeutic sessions where we have been able to begin working through effective and positive communication as well as some designs for better parenting (i.e. listening, asking questions). It's been a growth process for us all and it is still ongoing. While it may not seem optimal right now, I know that as we continue to work together, all of us stand to have a stronger and better family in the long run.
And for that I am so grateful to all who made this possible.
