Fall/2015

We have had a wonderful summer at Sandalfoot. It was a little bit rainier than most summers, however, we do live in a sub-tropical climate! Fall is now upon us and we welcome sunny but less humid weather and a number of fall traditions that we love.

Sanibel's Farmer's Market re-opened the first weekend in October and it is bigger and better than ever. Held each Sunday from 9 - 1, it offers fresh fruits and vegetables, breads, seafood, cheeses and home baked goods. It is not to be missed and visitors and residents alike make it part of their Sunday morning routine.

Holidays on Sanibel

One of our favorite times of year on the island is the Luminary celebration that occurs on Sanibel and Captiva the first week of December. Picture the bike paths lit with candles, trolleys taking guests from one stop to the next along Periwinkle Way, and greetings of refreshments and entertainment at every stop. It is a wonderful time to explore both islands, see old friends and make new ones!

Luminary Sanibel will be held on Friday, December 4th and Luminary Captiva on Saturday December 5th. If you can escape for a few days before the season begins in earnest, please make Sandalfoot your home away from home and enjoy the best of the Luminary Festival. (P.S. Sandalfoot is a Bronze Sponsor of this great festival too.) Call us at 800-725-2250. Click here to view full blog post.

What's New at Sandalfoot?

More Upgrades at Sandalfoot

Late summer and early fall mean just one thing at Sandalfoot: renovations! Three of our units have newly renovated bathrooms, and one unit was completely remodeled over the summer to feature a separate master bedroom and large en-suite bathroom.

Our two-bedroom end units in each building have completely new screened lanais with stronger supports and higher quality screen. The construction is unique in that there are no exterior screws or bolts showing, therefore less rust and a better product long term.

The grounds have been manicured and new plants and bushes abound on the property. Pink muhly grass and coco plum have been planted along the boardwalk and are native to Florida. These plantings do not require any extra watering which makes them more environmentally friendly. Grounds-keeping is an ongoing work-in-progress but the hard work is paying off. Sandalfoot looks very lush with our beautiful landscaping and we know that our owners and guests appreciate it.

New Billy's Bikes!

This week also brought us a new shipment of 25 bicycles from Billy's Bikes. We are very pleased to have these brand new bikes for our guests to rent.

We received 20 blue bikes with a 17" frame. We also received five new 14" frame bikes with 24" wheels. These will be appropriate for adults and teens with longer legs.

Sanibel Island Tidbits

Sea Turtle Season Update

Sea Turtle nesting season is over. It spans the weeks from early May to the end of October. Sanibel Island broke the record for the second year in a row. There were 522 nests laid on Sanibel, beating the 2014 number of 411, which was also record-breaking. One of the reasons for the success is that residents and visitors are very aware of the lights out campaign that requests that all exterior lights be turned off and windows covered after sundown so that the turtle hatchlings are not attracted to the light and inadvertently walk away from the water.

The number of hatchlings would have been higher but storms at the end July did lead to some wash-outs. Sanibel and Captiva lost 60 nests to the July storms. The number of volunteers has also increased. These volunteers mark the nesting sites with yellow tape and also place screens over the nest to keep predators away.

On Sanibel and Captiva, 26 of the nests were record-setting green turtle nests. Most sea turtles are the loggerhead turtles. Sea Turtle nest time on the beaches is one of the things that makes southwest Florida unique and is an integral part of the Sanibel culture.
