Saint Junípero Serra leaves Mallorca, Spain, never to return. He would write home from Cádiz, Spain, August 20, 1749; "I wish I could share with them [Mom and Dad] the great joy that fills my heart. Surely then they would encourage me to move forward and never turn back."

Does Coaching Help?

Baseball Coach Martell London studies the form of art teacher and Class of '70 all star football, basketball and baseball player, Tim Boyer.  Coach/Mister Boyer will be leading a foursome  at Serra's Inaugural Golf Tournament to be held at Chester A. Washington Golf Course on May 21st.

Join Boyer, Hurt, Cormier, Hadley, Dabbs, Duffy, She pherd, Williams, Henderson, Thomas, Jackson, Almaraz, Conley, Stoot, Brown-Sadler, Kates, Caniglia, Bunt, Meyerhofer and many, many more Cavaliers at the Golf Tournament.
How Good Is Tim Boyer?
Over the years Serra High School has produced as much talent and success as any Southern California institution. From profound accomplishments in academia to triumphs on the athletic field, being a Cavalier is nearly synonymous with success. There is perhaps no greater example than Tim Boyer; the long-time teacher, coach, alumni stalwart and 1970 Serra graduate has done as much for the school as anyone. Not to be forgotten, however, is his golf game.

"Growing up, we golfed just for fun. It was just something to do when football season was over." explained the ever-bashful Mr. Boyer.

"We never even considered how good we might be and we hardly ever even kept a running score. We played skins."

It was indeed, not until he saw his first televised golf match that Boyer realized that an overall score over 18 holes was the more common form of score keeping.

"That's when I realized that I had a talent." said Boyer who admits he still doesn't completely understand how the scoring works. "I just play my game and at the end, they tell me my score."

To hear Boyer explain it, it's a wonder he never pursued a career as a professional golfer.

"Some of those guys, even the best ones have scores in the sixties and seventies, that's nothing for me." Boyer explained proudly, "I'm not happy if my score is anything less than 100."

Even more impressive is what seems to be Mr. Boyer invention of a new style of play which relies heavily on Gimmies and Mulligans.

"If I hit the ball within a few feet of the hole, I just pick it up; close enough, right? We call those Gimmies."

Many a golfer will square up in the tee box come May 20th for the Cavalier Golf Classic, a fundraising tournament to be held at Chester Washington Golf Course. Tim Boyer has made it clear that he is the man to beat.

"From what I hear, some of these guys are even lucky if they shoot 80 or 90, much less 100." said Boyer with a champion's gleam in his eye.

"Let's just say I've been preparing my victory speech."
Serra in the PGA Tour
As alumni of Serra High School, we are used to celebrating fellow Cavaliers as they move on to the next level in their athletic careers.  We root for our favorite Serra athletes as they compete professionally in football, baseball and basketball.  We cheer for many former Serra track stars at the collegiate, Olympic and professional ranks.  However, few of you probably know that we have our very own PGA pro - class of '74's very own Greg Milligan.

Greg entered the golf business after college in 1978, becoming the head golf professional at Fallbrook Country Club.  In 1981, he moved to Bonsall and took a position as Director of Golf at San Luis Rey Downs Golf Resort where he stayed for 30 years.  At the same time, he entered the PGA, earning a victory at the Rums of Puerto Rico Open in 1987.  He remains a member of the PGA and over the years has played in many Senior PGA and local PGA events.

Throughout his career, he has run many golf schools and tournaments and now owns his own golf teaching and fitting center, The Golf Shop, in Carlsbad, California.

In addition to all of these accomplishments, Greg works for Crystal Cruises, giving golf clinics and playing lessons around the world.

We are honored to have Greg join us at the 1st Serra Cavalier Golf Classic.
We Want You!

It's time....What are you waiting for?  The 1st Annual Serra Cavalier Golf Classic is right around the corner and we want you.

Bring your friends or meet up with old pals as we enjoy an awesome day of golf, laughs and great memories.

We have an exciting tournament day planned with contests, goody bags and player gifts.

Still not enough?  We also are planning a Dinner Banquet complete with delicious food, a silent auction and raffle.

The best reason to participate in the tournament is because the proceeds will help support current Serra Cavaliers with tuition assistance.

See you on Friday, May 20th!
