"It Happens Every Spring"
"It Happens Every Spring" was a 1949 baseball movie. Baseball happens every spring. It happened yesterday. Serra's baseball team hosted Bishop Amat in the league opener. Serra lost 6-1. Track the Cavs schedule on MaxPreps. Trck the Lady Cavs schedule on MaxPreps too.
The baseball bleachers were full for the league opener at beautiful Clements/Joshua Field. In the picture above in the middle of the front row, Brian Cooper '74 is with baseball mom Trina Castaneda. Brian is the Chair of Serra's Golf Tournament. Brian and Trina are discussing parent volunteers for Serra's Golf Tournament to be held Friday, May 20 at Chester A. Washington Golf Course.
In the top row, you will find parent Gloria McCoy. Gloria spent the morning folding, filling and addressing 47 envelopes to a special group of people. The 47 will begin receiving these envelopes in their mail boxes today.

Car Show Happens in Spring Too
Carolyn Madera, Booster President, tells us we are ahead of last year for car registrations. Below is a picture of last year's Alumni participants and a random selection of other Alumni car show pictures from last year. Mike "Speedy" Gonzales '64 will be one of the judges for the fabled Alumni Car Show Trophym which was won last year by Rob Wiessner '73.
Pacific Motorsales is a Car Show sponsor and is bringing a Classic Car or 2 from their Show Room at 16828 S. Main in Gardena. Their Show Room is a must see for classic car enthusiasts.
The Sheriff' s Department is bringing their dragster and will be firing it up.

Serra H.S. / Harvard University
We received this note through Mike Almaraz '75 from his nephew, Dr. Anthony Covarrubias. Anthony has done some great things since leaving Serra.
"Hello Uncle Mike,"
"Here are a couple of pictures of me working in the lab at Harvard. They are not as pretentious as standing in front of the Harvard logo."
Anthony Covarrubias '02 was Serra's Salutatorian in '02. Anthony attended UCLA, majored in Biochemistry and worked in laboratories conducting research ranging from cell biology to public health research focusing on drug addiction and infectious diseases. After graduating from UCLA, Anthony became a research assistant in a laboratory at UCLA Medical School where he studied cancer and the immune system.
Anthony '02 in Serra's Sci-Fi Club
moderated by Joe McDorman '91
In '09 Anthony was accepted into the Biological Sciences in Public Health PhD program at Harvard University. Fresh from defending his PhD in last December, Anthony has begun a Post-Doctoral research position at UCSF/Gladstone Institute studying the immune system and disease. Anthony has been published in multiple science journals. He recently received the Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship and the UC President's Post-Doctoral Fellowship. Anthony plans to establish his own laboratory with a focus on diseases that affect communities of color.
Dr. Rogers addressing the student body
at Career Day
Anthony joins Dr. A.J. Rogers '71 as a Serra Alumnus who has graduated from Harvard with a doctorate. If there are any other members of this elite group, please let us know.

El Camino College Credit at Serra
Serra students can earn college credits and not leave the Serra campus. El Camino offers 8 college level classes on the Serra campus. Pictured in the center is Professor Trish Brodaksilva with four of her Serra students. Trish teaches the ECC course "Public Speaking and Intercultural Communications." She has a bachelor's degree from CSULB and a master's degree from CSULA. Trish told us that she was pleased with the support Serra's administration and faculty have given her to ensure students understand that the class is a college class and the students have to meet college standards........and they do. Thanks to all the El Camino professors who teach at Serra.
