Serra Valedictorian
A warm welcome back to 2012's valedictorian, Huy Nguyen. The Serra alumnus is graduating from UCLA this spring with a degree in pyschobiology. Pictured with Nguyen is assistant principal, Mr. Wissa.

Another Serra Alum
Jeff Lyons '75 reads about Serra from his home in New Zealand. In coming home for a visit he stopped in to see his old school. One of the things that caught his attention was how well kept the school is. We took his picture here with Miguel Soto one of Serra's superb maintenance men. Tony's brother Ken graduated in '72, his Dad, Matt was a big Dad's club volunteer and his Mom, Marion, supports Serra every year.

Cavalier Teamwork
Consider that Serra has 3 boys basketball teams and 3 girls basketball teams sharing the gym during basketball season. In November & December, 2 volleyball teams and the fall drama production are also sharing space and time.
Cavalier spirit and teamwork demonstrated by two great coaches has put the boys team into the 3rd round of CIF 4AA and the Lady Cavaliers into the consolation bracket of the CIF Open Division.
Any Place Have Two Better Coaches?
Coach Dwan Hurt is on the right above. Coach Hurt has been the Dean at Serra since 2000 and has been the boys basketball coach since replacing Coach George McDaniel in 1986. Coach Hurt has led Boys basketball team to CIF championships in '93, '99, '00, '06, '10. '12, '13 and State Championships in '93 and '10.
2010 State Champions
Dwan graduated from Serra in 1981 and played at Gonzaga where he replaced a guy named Stockton.
The Boys play JSerra TOMORROW night 7:00PM in the Serra gym as they pursue a 4AA CIF championship.
On the left is Coach McKinsey Hadley Jr. He attended Serra as a junior in '90-'91 and became a Cavalier for life. Coach Hadley began coaching the Lady Cavaliers in 2007.
Coach Hadley also teaches Math. A common sound outside our door....."Mr. Hadley, Mr. Hadley, why do you give us so much homework."
The Lady Cavaliers won CIF championships in '10,'11& '12 and a State Championship in 2013.
The Lady Cavs lost a close Open Division first round game to Windward last Saturday night at Windward.
The Lady Cavs will play in the consolation round against Harvard-Westlake at Serra at 7:00PM this Wednesday February 24th.

Who Played First?
Here is a picture of Serra's '57-'58 JV Team. If the 'Cs played away, you are looking at the team who played the first game in the Serra gym.
While we are at it, we might as well show you a picture of the '57-'58 varsity basketball team who played the first Varsity game in the gym.

Is There Anything Cavaliers Can't Do?
For the last 5 years, Serra students have been invited to and participate in the Gardena Lions Club Speech competition. (Click and join your local Lions Club) This year's topic is "Liberty and Justice for All" - What does it Mean to You? Abeil Tsegai '16 on the right finished first and will be competing in the next round on March 2nd in a location to be announced. If you want to hear a stunning speech, go listen to Abeil. Bryce Gentry '16, on the left, was a close second. Bryce's Dad, Reggie Gentry attended and, according to Austin Jackson '01, will be playing in the Cavalier Classic on May 20. In the center is Don Dear, Lions Club President, the Head of the East Basin Municipal Water District and a great supporter of Serra.
Special thanks to Brendan Reynolds who did the coaching, teaches and is the moderator for Serra's Model UN Club.

The Older Peoples Department
Thursday afternoon, Lt. Col. Bob Chiota USAF Ret. and a Board member of the Vietnam Veterans of America South Bay Chapter came to Serra to deliver 6 applications for college scholarships funded by the Viet Nam Vet South Bay Chapter. We walked around the campus with Bob and he met a few students...then as we walked between 2 buildings a couple of Serra students saw his cap and identifying shirt and told him "thank you for your service." It's always something to see a man cry. We ended up meeting in Vietnam era Navy Vet Tom Alford '63 math tutorial classroom. Here is Tom in the center, Lt. Col Bob on his left. They are surrounded by Tom's students.
If you are sitting around and not using your Math Skills, Tom could use some help.
Another old guy, Pat Lanphere '57 and his wife Sharon, a Culver City graduate, toured the campus, paid for his Legacy Tile and met some of Serra's star students. We are turning in Legacy Tile orders Wednesday the 24th.

Honor Roll
Speaking of star students, Serra held its Honors Assembly for the fall semester last week. This year 42 seniors made the Principal's Honor Roll which means a 4.00 or better. Another 21 had GPA's 3.5 to 3.99. Scanning the list, it is not a surprise to find that the best students are also involved in activities, athletics and/or have part time jobs. Mr. Nadi Wissa, Assistant Principal, is on the far left and Mr. Jeffrey Guzman, Principal, is on the far right.
