Junipero Serra founded Mission Santa Clara de Asis.

Mission Santa Clara became the first mission in California named after a woman.  Santa Clara University (1851) was well as the city and county of Santa Clara would be built around the mission.

What Do Serra Graduates Do?
Wish you all could have been here Monday morning to see what seven of them did. After their many struggles and successes in college, they came up with the idea that they wanted Serra's Class of 2016 to benefit from their experiences.

Monday morning, January 11, the class of 2016 assembled in Room 405 to listen to the Serra 7 discuss their successes, their struggles, and the adjustments they made to succeed at LMU, at Cal State Fullerton, at Duke, at San Diego State, at Arizona, at USC and at UC Davis.

Here are the Serra 7.

In front, left to right:

Dominique Hale '12 is at Cal State Fullerton and has 3.4 GPA in Sociology.  Dominique's immediate plan is to become a Recreation Program Director and then develop her own non-profit that will serve at-risk youth.  Dominique reports that "at the same time I will continue to fulfill the call that God has on my life to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ."

Danielle Orange-Scott '10 has a B.A. and M.A. from LMU with a 3.67 GPA in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Special Education. She is teaching in the Teach for America Program at 107th St. School. Danielle plans to become a college professor and a youth minister.

In the back row, left to right are

Celena Fisher '12 is at San Diego State with a 3.00 GPA in criminal justice and will become a United States Marshall.
Here is Celena answering a student's question.

Kelsey Wilson '10 graduated with degree in Finance with a 3.2 GPA from the University of Arizona.  Kelsey is currently a Financial Advisor and plans to build a big business.  Kelsey is with Northwestern Mutual in Santa Monica. Make your money grow, send him an email: [email protected]

Urina Harrell '12 is at Duke with a 3.25 GPA and a major in Psych. Urina's plan is to become a marketing executive, then build her own marketing company with a long range goal of becoming a philanthropist.

Ariel Williams-Scott '10 is at USC with a 3.58 GPA and will be an entrepreneur and then a philanthropist.

Marcus Williams '10 is at UC Davis with a 2.45 GPA in Sociology and Organizational Studies.  Marcus has an immediate objective of advancing to the finals of the 2016 Olympic Finals.  He will be an Athletic Director.

One of the 7 reported flunking out of college and then returned to the same institution and is now employed by that institution.

Click the link to see more pictures from the event.

When a few seniors were asked what they received from the presentation, the reply can be summed up with one senior's reaction:
  • Keep God first in everything you do
  • Work on your financial aid early
  • Put studying first

Tee Time

What class and what golfers will hit the first ball off  the tees at beautiful Chester L. Washington Golf Course at approximately 1:00PM on Friday, May 20.

What a glorious day it will be. There are 18 holes in a golf tournament. This allows for only 144 golfers.

If you click on the link, you will see that there are many opportunities to participate. However, hole sponsorships are limited to 2 per hole allowing for only 36 hole sponsorships.

The "sweet spot" is to become a Gold Sponsor. If you want to promote your business or a product as well as providing financial assistance to superb Catholic high school students,  a $2,500 gold sponsorship gets you:
  • Identification as a Gold Sponsor
  • One foursome and dinner for 8
  • Recognition in the event program and at the event.
  • 8 Friend of Serra Cards
  • A Sponsor Gift
  • Satisfaction that you are providing important support for a Serra student.
Much to our surprise, there is another Gold Sponsor category.  The Class of 1961 has asked if they can become a Gold Sponsor. They have nothing to promote other than Serra students. The Tournament Committee approved. So the Class of '61 are the tournament's first Gold Sponsor (by the way, leaving room for only 140 more golfers) with the following benefits:

Identification as a Gold Sponsor
  • One foursome and dinner for 8
  • Recognition in the event program
  • 8 Alumni or Friends of Serra Cards (picture of card and benefit)
  • A Commemorative Pin of Serra's First Golf Tournament
  • Satisfaction that you are providing important support for a Serra student.
We wonder if we could get 17 other classes(or combinations of  classes) out of our  62 graduating classes to do what '61 will do.

Thanks to Spear's Appliance, Rowley Portraiture, and Vince Kates '61 for donating to the Silent Auction.

Christmas Visitors

Patrick Lanphere '57 follows Serra's progress. His granddaughter came to Serra with Patrick's great-grandson. They are pictured here with Austin Jackson '01, Serra football coach, P.E./Health coach, and Gov./Econ. teacher.

Patrick is getting his tile. Need about 15 more tile orders and we can fill the last section the Alumni Legacy Tile Wall.

California's Poet Laureate
You likely know that Dana Gioia '69 is California's Poet Laureate. Religion teacher and El Padre editor, Jason Reeves, forwarded us this link to a wonderful interview with Dana from City Journal.

The tales we tell are either false or true,
But neither purpose is the point.
We weave the fabric of our own existence out of words.
And the right story tells us who we are.
From Dana's "Pity the Beautiful." 2012
