This newsletter features lots of Cavaliers helping/supporting other Cavaliers and a non-Cavalier helping a Cavalier.

The Alumni are supporting the Booster's Dance,  Athletes and staff went and visited  a hospitalized Serra parent and you will see more "helps" and "supports"  in this newsletter.

Speaking of parents, parent Janice Austin went and renewed the EZ Will Driving School promotional package.

If you have an opportunity to just attend or help promote an event at Serra, whether it be a game, a play, a dance, do it.

Cavaliers Helping Cavaliers
Mike Orozco, his wife Barbara and their family, has played an important role at Serra over many years. Mike and Barbara's sons Dan '67 and Steve '72 are Serra Alumni.   Daughter Cindy is a St. Mary's '68 graduate and was a Serra Homecoming Princess in the fall of '66.   Mike and Barbara have been regular attendees at Serra's Dedication to Excellence dinners.  Have to mention that Barbara Foxen Orozco was the Class President each year at St. Mary's and was Valedictorian in 1946.

Mike is in the hospital and was bragging about Serra to his hospital roommate Ron Taylor. So Mr. Taylor got busy and contacted Coach Dwan Hurt. Coach Hurt '81, Dev. Director Joe Cormier'81 accompanied football players Khalil Tate , Brandon Burton, basketball players Jhanale Gayle and Mason Shipley for a visit with Mike.  Mike's wife Barbara and daughter Cyndi  were there as well.

On the left is Ron Taylor, a true Cavalier in spirit, with the visiting Cavaliers. Thank you Mr. Taylor for helping! On the right is Mike Orozco as Booster Club President in '67

Wife Barbara and daughter Cyndi came to campus the next day and met up with Carolyn Madera, Serra's current Booster Club President, and John Cragin '70, former Serra Vice-Principal, basketball coach, player and our current volunteer grant writer.

Alex Davis '93 and Dominique Hale '12 met at the Alumni Legacy Wall. Alex is the co-founder and chairman of the Ariza Elevated Game Awards and was here to determine if Serra has candidates for this year's awards.  We do.  Alex played on the famous '93 Serra State Championship team.   Dominique will be graduating from Cal State Fullerton with a Sociology degree next June.

Will both be at the Dance?

A Game of Flinches
Serra 21 - Chaminade 38
Two minutes left in the game. Serra had erased 14 of Chaminade's 17-point lead.  Chaminade with the ball: 4th and 4 on its own 20.  With just a 3-point lead, the Eagles lined up to punt.  Serra would get one last chance however remote.  The Eagles shifted and someone flinched.

That one flinch and the roof caved in. Offsides, 5 yard penalty, first down for Chaminade at the 25, Serra with no time outs.  Instead of a miraculous come back, instead stumbling away with a disappointing but respectable 3-point loss, the Cavs gave up 14 points in the final sixty seconds and left humiliated 38 - 21.  The last two touchdowns were flukes, but the score was not.  The Eagles outplayed Serra in every aspect of the game of football.

Chaminade ran 92 plays to Serra's 45.  They punted only once. The defense was on the field 70% of the game.  But the defense never gave up.  Three times, the Cavs denied the Eagles a touchdown after a first inside the red zone.

The problem was offense.  All of Serra's scores were triggered by patented Khalil Tate escapes.  The last touchdown, in particular, featured a nearly miraculous fourth down run after Tate emerged from a sure sack.  But the passing game -- on the whole -- was anemic.  Despite a few encouraging run plays, the same was true of the run game.

Anything like a play-by-play from this game would be like drinking an e coli cocktail.  Nothing to do but hope it's a one-off.  The Cavs remain Mission League Champs.

On to the playoffs:  Slight consolation to see that Chaminade is scheduled to meet the meatgrinder that is 2015 Centennial Corona.  Serra, on the other hand, is scheduled to play the 7-3 Westlake at home next Friday.  Westlake finished third in the Marmonte League, losing to Oaks Christian and St. Bonaventure.  The Warriors are not to be taken lightly.  There are no easy ones in the play-off.
