First Day of School

Serra Seniors Class of 2016 pose on Senior Lawn before classes start for Serra's new year.

Serra's first day of class was September 18, 1950.

Morning classes end and most survive one of Serra's great traditions...no air conditioning......and relax in the school yard.

Let the Year Begin
For the last 3 years, the Serra faculty and administrators have prepared for the new school year at the Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center in Sierra Madre.

While it is a time for prayer and reflection, some other things happen. The picture on the left above shows the veterans celebrating their 3rd consecutive victory in a row over the "newbies" in the annual "we don't know what you call it contest".....but it is a contest filled with thrills and chills.  The picture on the right above gives you a glimpse of a team building exercise.

Serra continues its good fortune in bringing dedicated teachers to Serra.  From left to right above are:

1. Austin Jackson is a 2001 Serra Alumnus and was an All-American linebacker.  Austin spent his college career at USC and Texas A&M and graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice.  Austin will be teaching P.E. and government.

2. Thomas Stafford graduated from LaSalle High School.......not far from the Mater Dolorosa retreat Center. Thomas is a Loyola-Marymount Alumnus and is Director of Marketing and Admissions.

3. Frank Solano graduated from Cathedral HS in '08. He graduated from Cal State University Los Angeles, the home of the Golden Eagles, last June.  Frank will be teaching World History. Anybody remember Coach Bill Sanchez who also graduated from Cathedral?

4. Kasi Royster graduated from Notre Dame Academy and then from Azusa Pacific. Kasi is a Loyola PLACEr and will be teaching sophomore and junior English.

5. Dr. Timothy Bengford will be the English Department Chair.  Dr. Bengford has  English and Performance Arts Degrees from St, Mary's, a Master 's in Musicology from CSULA and a Ph.D.in the Humanities from Florida State. Dr. Tim might be Serra's best piano player.

6. Andra Maria Anton came to the United States from Romania at the age of 3. Andra speaks fluent Romanian.  She has her B.A. from UCLA and a Master of Arts in the Humanities and will be teaching 9th grade English.

7. Gialuka Ruffel is a graduate of Granada Hills HS and was awarded a B.S. in Math from UCLA.  Gialuka will be teaching Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus and Calculus.

8. Chris Calvin is a Serra Alumnus from '06 and graduated from Fresno State in 2011. Chris has been serving as Assistant Athletic Director and an Assistant Football Coach.  He is now full time teaching Algebra 1, biology and anatomy.

Cavaliers Return
Pam Maldonado '12 visited Serra last week.  She is attending UNLV and has a double major in biology and athletic training at UNLV.  While a senior at Serra, Pam was a top student, an athletic trainer, a leading student ambassador for marketing and admissions, and more. Pam continues her marketing success by working  for "Renewal by Anderson," the leading home remodeling firm in Las Vegas.

Here she is in the training room wearing her Hurt shirt and observing Serra trainer Myra Ruiz applying ice to an injured knee. Trainer A.J. Perry is observing.

What do Serra Parents do?
Juan Sosa '95 spent the first day of school helping package paperwork for the first parent meetings.
From left to right, parents Juan, Marissa McKeever, Rocio Sosa , and Shaunna Carter also pitched in. Juan and Rocio have 2 students at Serra, a junior and a freshman.
When finished packing, Juan took the time to visit the Alumni Legacy Wall.....showing him the wall is Miguel Soto....Miguel is one of the reasons the campus is always clean.
