Career Day: A Success
Last Friday of January, Serra Alumni, Parents, and Friends come to campus to participate in Career Day. They are assigned classrooms and discuss the requirements for their field with the students. This year students were exposed to careers including airline pilots, flight school instructors, engineering, insurance, real estate, radio, banking, law enforcement and public safety officers, politics (Gardena's Mayor Pro Tem was in attendance), medicine and many more.

Our keynote speaker was Dr. Ancel J. Rogers, MD, FACS.

Dr. Rogers is from right here...St. Eugene's '67, Serra '71 and then on to a Bachelor of Science in physics from Stanford and a doctorate of medicine from Harvard University. Dr. Rogers is currently in private practice, is an Associate Professor of Surgery at UC Riverside and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at UCLA. He is also serving as the President of he J.W. Vines Foundation. "The Vines Foundation is a critical link in the effort to increase the number and diversity of health care professionals in the Inland Empire." See the Link.
Serra is scheduled to produce another Harvard Medical School graduate this May.
Alumni Attend Mass
The day before Career Day, Mass was celebrated in the gym on Campus as a part of National Catholic Schools Week. Tom Alford '63 is shown on the left reading the Prayers of the Faithful. Father Ken Templin S.M. is on the right offering blessings to the alumni.

Cheer Does It Again
Serra's Cheer team, led by Coach Kerris Watkins, won the Sharp International Regional Cheer Championship and were 3rd in Hip-Hop last Saturday at Santa Fe High School. They will now be competing for a JAMZ National Championship in both Cheer and Hip-Hop in Las Vegas on February 20 at the New Orleans Hotel. We will have a performance time for the Serra Alumni who are denizens of Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City so they can attend and cheer our Cheer team.

College Expo
Here are 6 of 18 of Serra's finest at the Black College Exposition held at the Convention Center last Saturday. 16 of 18 brought paperwork with them, 16 Serra Scholars were accepted on the spot. 10 were offered scholarships. 10 were offered multiple scholarships from colleges including Tuskegee, Hampton, Fisk, Bethune-Cookman, Lincoln University, and University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
