Whiplash and Broken Hearts
Okay we avoided writing about this as long as we could.
Serra's 8th ranked football team ventured into the wilds of North Riverside county last Friday night to challenge 3rd ranked Corona Centennial in the first round of the Pac5 playoffs. Our Cavaliers did not have to play the game alone. Serra's parents, grandparents, alumni and fans devoted a portion of their lives to inch along on the 91 Freeway in order to fill the visitor's bleachers and cheer on our team.
Pat Lynch '59, our usual reporter, could not make the game. However, this week, Max Preps, The Daily Breeze The Riverside Press Enterprise and the LA Times all had featured articles on this exhilarating match-up. You had to be there to see Centennial run 117 plays and Serra run 95 plays with many of them going for lots of yards. (Whiplash). 12 touchdown passes thrown. (more whiplash) 15 lead changes. (heart palpitations)
By halftime, Serra held a tenuous 35-34 lead. The whiplash and palpitations continued throughout the 3rd quarter and into the 4th quarter. With 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter, Centennial took a 68-64 lead. The game way far from over. Now it appeared that the script could play out and the good guys would win with a touchdown in the last minute. Alas, with 4th and 9 on the Centennial 14 and little time left, a pass was rifled toward the end zone........a Centennial player jumped the route intercepted and this Pac5 play-off game was over. 68-64. The hearts that had only been palpitating were broken.
