Serra Hosts Visitors

Thursday afternoon, Serra hosted 16 students from the University of Dayton, Chaminade University, and St. Mary's University, San Antonio... all Marianist Universities. Bro. Mark Motz S.M. from Chaminade, Bro. Brandon Paluch and Maureen O'Rourke from Dayton and Brian Buchmeyer from St. Mary's have been shepherding the students for a week throughout southern California including tours of the Union Rescue Mission, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, and many other southland facilities. Jacquline Torres, who runs Campus Ministry and the Life Team brought the visitors up to date with Serra's Campus Ministry and our guests spent a few minutes watching Coach Zac Bose '82 run frosh basketball practice. Bro. Skip Matthews '58 accompanied the group and he described some of the Senior Walk traditions. We won't repeat them here. Of course, none of them have seen anything like the Alumni Legacy Wall. After our tour one of the chaperons remarked, "I wish I could have gone to school here."

Dr. Richard Hejlik '54

Richard lives in Modesto. When he learned through the newsletter that the Cavaliers  would be playing in the Modesto Tournament, he attended to support his alma mater.  Pictured is Dr. Hejlik with Coach Hurt '81, Kerry Boagni '82 and Patrick Copeland '82 at the tournament.

Attention residents of Cerritos, Cypress, La-Miranda and all points east and south of Serra.

You can follow Richard's example. Tomorrow, Saturday, January 11th, the 3rd Annual Cavalier Basketball Classic takes place at Cerritos College. Games begin at 10:00 AM. Your Cavaliers play Peninsula in the feature game at 5:00 PM. At 8:30 PM, Coach Ed Azzam will be going for Westchester's 804th win during his tenure to become LA City's All-Time winningest coach.

Here is a link about the event: Cavalier Classic Program

Parking is $5.00. Floor seats are $25.00 and Stadium seats are $10.00. While your Alumni Card will get you in the game at no charge, the Classic is a major source of funds for the basketball program. If you can, buy a ticket.

Hurt's 500

Coach Dwan Hurt and the 2013 Cavaliers won his 500th game on December in the Modesto Tournament when they defeated Freedom High School 71-57.
Come on and celebrate on January 17th when Serra plays LaSalle at 7:00PM.  Coach will be honored at half time.  To add to the ngiht, members of Coach's first State Championship Team from 1993 will be in attendance and introduced at half time.
