CIF Round One: Serra vs. Serra
The score makes it look like it was an easy game. Serra 48 over Oxnard Pacifica 16. It was and it wasn't.
Oxnard, like St. Paul last week, played with poise and heart, but they were simply no match for the Cavs. The Cavs themselves generated the opposition. Eleven major penalties: three for pass interference, two blocks in the back, two face masks, and one each holding, unsportsmanlike conduct and unspecified personal foul, Serra penalties (or, in one case, a Cavalier fumble) were essential contributors to each of Pacifica's three scores. But, in general, the 2013 Cavs were just too good to beat themselves. When they were cooking, the Cavs were hot. They scored 14 points before their first offensive snap. Adoreé Jackson was all-round impressive, including several "routine" plays on defense that demonstrated his down and superb defensive skills. Jalen Greene ran for a touch and threw some of his best passes of the season. Jordan Lasley and Isaac Cox were open at will and made key catches. The O-line gave Greene more time than he's had for several weeks. Darrion Naylor averaged around five yards a carry. Dwight Williams had a pick 6 on Pacifica's first series. The D-line stopped Pacifica fourth and short time and again. Kahlil Tate, running the offense for most of the second half, was robbed of a touchdown run as impressive as Greene's. Non starters got lots of time and experience. There were rough spots, but it looks good for the future. The Cavs play Buena of Ventura in Ventura next week. Buena prevailed 28-7 over Morro Bay (which at least makes for a shorter road trip). The Maxpreps ratings would say Buena's chances are mala, but to quote the late JFK, that's why Rice plays Texas.
