Junipero Serra High School Alumni eNewsletter
Serra Alumni Coming Back! Recognize any of these Serra graduates? They are all Serra Alumni who are now teaching, coaching or volunteering at Serra. Our students are in good hands. From the upper left, Lucy Orozco '05 teaches geometry, pre-calculus and honors pre-calculus. Lucy advises the Sons & Daughters of Mary on campus. Lucy is the modern Ms. Kennelly. Adriana Gonzalez '03 teaches religion and theatre arts. Adrianna is the latter day equivalent of Mr. Barnes and directs Serra's plays. Watch for the date of the fall/winter play and attend. Joe McDorman '91 teaches honors history, world history, and government. Plan on coming to a junior varsity or freshman football game, you will get to hear the best junior varsity and freshman football announcer in all of Southern California, Joe McDorman. Dwan Hurt '81 is Dean of Students and Varsity Basketball Coach (26 years). In the spring of 2011, Dean Hurt (13 years) was voted the best Dean Serra has ever had. Coach Hurt has won more State, CIF and League Basketball Championships than Coaches Sanchez, Leslie, Maikowski and many more combined. Joe Cormier '81 is Serra's Development Director. He raises money for Serra. Help him. Buy your ticket, make a donation and come to Coaches Night. Both Joe and Dwan played football and basketball at Serra. Both will be at Coaches Night. Ask them yourselves who was better at each. Tim Boyer '70 teaches art and how to be a model Serra Cavalier. Tim will always remain Serra's 2nd professional football player. We are working on getting Serra's first professional football player to attend. Tim will be at Coaches Night on September 28. September 28 is also Tim's Birthday.
Side note, there is one other birthday being celebrated at Coaches Night. You will only find out whose birthday it is by attending. Hint, she is the wife of a famous Cavalier from the '80s.
Vince Kates '61 volunteers in the Alumni Office. Vince sits in the office and looks bald.
Zac Bose '82 is not pictured. Zack is helping in the Alumni Office. Of course, thanks to all of the above. And a special thanks to all the teachers and staff who work at Serra and help our students become Serra men and women. More on Serra's Alumni Contributions At the Coaches meeting last night for all Coaches in all sports, we asked for a show of hands of how many coaches are Serra Alumni. A lot did. Special thanks to all the Alumni who have returned to assist. Let us also thank the non-Alumni Coaches for being a part of Serra. Class of '67 Returns The class of 1967 returned to the Serra High Campus on Saturday August 17. Mike Johnston, Steve Kollmeyer, and Mark Williams played key roles in a successful evening. '67 was Bro. John Haster's S.M. first year of teaching and delighted the class with his presence. Tony Wiezorek '59 and English Teacher gave a superb and thoughtful talk. Hats are also off to Don Franzen who stirred the class. An interesting question asked was "Why doesn't Serra have a ladies golf team?" COACHES NIGHT IS COMING!!!
