ARE YOU SUPERB IN MATH?

An opportunity to help.

We hope you are aware of Serra's superb math program in the tradition of Bro. Bernard Pleimann, S.M., Mr. Ned McNabb
and other great
Serra Math teachers.

Now under the direction of Mr. Nadi Wissa, Serra repeatedly wins National Championships
(3 in a row).

Tom Alvord '63, is volunteering as
a tutor in Math.

If you know
Algebra through Calculus and want to help
Serra's Math Team,

EASY MONEY:
We received a $300.00 check from Target.

With a little research, we learned that Gardena High received a cash back check of $15,000 plus.

The program donates a percentage of your purchase to the school of your choice.

With a little more research, we learned that not only Target, but Costco, Sam's Club, and others alike, have similar cash back/donation programs.

Each store has a little different process.

So, go to each of your favorite stores and sign up for their give back program.

This seems to be a painless way to produce a few dollars for Serra.

Continue your Prayers for
the Serra Family
for those that might be
less fortunate during this holiday season.

Remember our Alma Mater
'Sacrifice and Charity'
and may we all be a witness for many, as we are witnesses ourselves.

Pray for all the Cavaliers

Homecoming was a Hit
One of the best turnouts of Alumni and Friends of Serra in years!
Before the game, a bunch of Alumni joined in with the Serra Cheer team to form the line that the Football players run through and onto the field.

During the game, the fans cheered the introductions of Alumni from the various decades. This year, the Lady Cavaliers were introduced separately and the cheer-o-meter indicated that they received the loudest cheer.

1995, First Year of Female Graduates

On the Field, the Cavalier's established the game plan early with multiple touchdowns in the first quarter, reminding many of the Alumni of that sweet smell of Victory and that the tradition of winning continues.

After the game, the Serra Drumline welcomed about 200 Alumni and friends into the gym to analyze and recognize familiar faces, reminisce through year books, and talk about old and new times.

Great Cavaliers

Tony Mannara '65, Bruce Herring '69, Tony Caira '66

Here's the connection; Caira, at 15 years of age, was the coach of Herring's, 10 year olds basketball team.
We wonder how many games they won.

It was great to see some new faces with the familiar ones at Homecoming post-game celebration this year.

"I haven't been here since Graduation" was said by a few, including Aaron Santinac '88, who returned to his Cavalier home with his beautiful wife and kids.

A few of our visitors in recent days included representatives from Harvard University and Northwestern University who were here taking a look at some of Serra's basketball players, both boys and girls.

Harvard and Northwestern know that if they get a player from Serra they will have the grades and study skills to make it.

Aaron Colson, Serra '10 and now at Dartmouth, was here to visit. Aaron is researching his thesis this semester on Catholic education from home.

Pat Haden, yes, that Pat Haden, was here as a representative of a Foundation which awards tuition assistance grants to 8 Serra students. Mr. Haden interviewed the students and left impressed.

The First Classes have a First Class Night!
The very first class of '53 to the Class of '64 returned for a Reunion

About 80 Serra Alumni from the '50s and early '60s returned to Serra for a First Classes Reunion in the gym on October 27th. They had a good time visiting the Alumni Wall, walking the campus and seeing their same lockers. Yes, they are the same lockers.

Look on the website of the US ARMY Bowl...

you will not see any names on the roster of the players or the coaches. But if you ask our Head Football Coach, Scott Altenberg, 'who is coaching the West team?', he can tell you. He received a call on Tuesday and accepted the honor and challenge to coach the US Army Bowl Game on January 5, 2013. Congratulations and we are proud of him!

We are ahead ... However...

Your Alumni Office is ahead of last year in raising money for Serra's tuition assistance program through events, the sale of Alumni Legacy Tiles, Alumni Cards and 5001 club memberships.

Thank you from the Alumni Staff and the students who have benefitted. However, we are  a long way from being where the Tuition Assistance pot needs to be.

You will have received or soon will receive Serra's Annual Report through the mail. There will be an envelope inside. If you want to donate, donate. If you don't want to donate, don't. If you want to get your Legacy Tile, send $200.00 and include your name and class year. If you want an Alumni Card, send $51.00. Here is a link for the Alumni Tile Form. (located at the bottom of the page)

Mark Dunn '76 hammers us to remind people that many organizations have matching donation programs.  If you belong to such an organization, please get them to match it.  Bruce Herring '69 does this every year.
