SERRA'S COLLEGE CREDIT COURSES

In collaboration with El Camino College, Serra offers 6 classes on our campus for college credit. About 65 students participate and graduate with college credits. El Camino Economics Professor, Nebbia Gerando, told us, "Serra students are fantastic.
The curriculum I teach at Serra
is more difficult than what
I teach at El Camino."

Serra's #1 Fan continues to deliver!
Al Burke maintains his dedication to the Cavaliers.
Burke Hands over Check

Serra's #1 fan, Mr. Alfred Burke and his son, Jack Burke '73, stopped in to deliver their annual donation to Serra. Accepting the check from Mr. Burke is Joe Cormier '81 while Jack and Coach Dwan Hurt look on. The amount will double when the employee matching grant from Jack's employer arrives. Mr. Burke is in full voice and ready for a full season of "LET'S GOOOOOO SERRA!"  .

THEN

Serra's baseball teams won Catholic League Championships in '59 and '64. Serra switched to the Camino Real League and won championships in '69 and '71. In those days Serra featured players like David Nelson '63 who went on to play 9 years in the Majors including an All-Star game appearance. I'll leave out a lot of our all league players but a few great ones were Mike Thornton '57, Brian Quinn '59, John Torok '61, Denny Grace '62, the pitcher -catcher duo of Randy Hammon and Greg Bero in '69 and Chuck Heil '71.

'64 was particularly talented. Gary Boyd '64 Pat Knutsen '64, John McMahon '64 and Tom Evan '64 were named first team all league. Steve Grace '64 and Derry Deravan '65 were 2nd team. Boyd, Knutsen and Deravan each signed pro contracts. After graduating, Juniors Wayne Tanaka, Chad Drier and Ralph Novotney headed to Loyola to play D-1 college ball. Quite a Team!

NOW

This year we had 3, count'em, 3 players make MaxPreps 2012 Underclass All-American Baseball Teams. Duncan McKinnon, 2nd base, hit .418 as a freshman and was named to the frosh All-Ammerican team. Denz'l Chapman played the OF, hit 462, stole 60 bases (3rd in the country in only 24 games) as a sophomore and was named to the sophomore All-American team. Dominic Smith, pitcher and 1st baseman, hit .561 as a junior. Dominic did some pitching as well and went 7-1 with a 1.22 ERA (Earned Run Average). Dominic was named to the Junior All-American team.

With 3 All-Americans returning, we are looking forward to a great season next year.

From Coach Wil Aaron, "We have three graduating seniors we'd like to wish much success to as they swing to the next level. Cody Davis, Reggie Southall (who will be attending USC) and Ryan Harkley."

Class Champions for Donations

We are able to track giving to Serra by class. The totals include Alumni Tiles, Alumni Membership Cards, Reunions, Annual Appeal letter response, etc. Donations specifically from Alumni for 2011-2012 were $150,136. A nice increase over the 2010-2011 year $109,736.

The top donors by Class over $5,000.00 were:

'61 $20,927.10
'60 $10,002.60

'62 $  9,187.00

'55 $  8,353.00

'54 $  7,777.00

'59 $  6,471.00

'63 $  6,404.00

'66 $  6,312.70

'65 $  5,933.00

Only 9 classes contributed more $5,000 in total. Only 5 alumni individually  contributed more than $5,000. We are going to get serious this year about putting Serra on a sound financial basis.
