Coach Smitty
(Head Football Coach at Serra in the mid '70's)
has passed away:

Ronald B. Smith
 (born Jan. 7, 1947, deceased April 28, 2012)

A long time teacher and coach in the Fontana Unified School District as well as Riverside Community College passed away on Saturday, April 28 at the Lakes in Banning, where he was a resident.
He leaves behind many friends, as well as fellow teachers and coaches who considered him as a brother. Also, he leaves behind many students and athletes to whom he passed on his knowledge and life lessons. Finally, there are those left behind who were fortunate enough to have known him well enough to consider him as their "Uncle Ron."
Prayers to All The Families from the Serra Family
Cavaliers Live On,
In God's Hands!

An Evening of Dedication to Remember

Saturday night April 21, 2012 was a night to remember. The "Dedication to Excellence" Dinner honoring Coach Hurt was a spectacular evening. The entire Serra family turned out. Alumni and Alumnae, Teachers, Coaches from all sports, Parents, Booster's, government officials and more filled the plushest room in the South Bay that night, the Serra Gym.

Special appreciation goes to our student ambassadors who welcomed each attendee to Serra and made every guest feel at home immediately.

Our Honorary Dinner Chair, Brian Quinn '59, spoke of his days at Serra and how proud he is to show our newsletter to his associates at Cal State Fullerton. He proves Serra, pound for pound, is the best high school in Southern California. Brian was followed to the podium by Jay Hillock, director of player personnel for the Chicago Bulls. Jay was a coach at Loyola while Brian was Athletic Director there. Jay left Loyola to become Coach at Gonzaga. Gonzaga recruited a young basketball player from Serra, Dwan Hurt. A triple play .....Quinn to Hillock to Hurt.

Coach Hillock brought 3 of Dwan's former teammates to the podium, Nick Zaharias, Tim Ruff and Dave Clement. The Gonzaga crew called Dwan up and presented him with his Gonzaga Jersey framed for display. Definitely a moment to remember.

On the applause meter, Nadi Wissa finished 2nd to Coach Hurt when he was introduced from the audience as having led Serra's Math Club to its 5th consecutive regional championship and its 3rd straight National Catholic Small School Math Championship.

For the grand finale, Monsignor Sal Pilato let Coach Hurt know that he has more years to go before he matches Coach Lou Cvijanovich's coaching longevity among Southern California coaches. Then the moment came we were waiting for... Monsignor presented Dwan with the "Dedication to Excellence" Award with Coach Jay Hillock, Brian Quinn' 59, President Erick Rubalcava, Principle Mike Wagner, Development Director Joe Cormier '81, Alumni Director Vince Kates '61 and Urina Harrell 12, our Student "Dedication to Excellence" winner looking on.

The Alumni Wall awaiting your Legacy Tile
  AlumniWall_TilesCloseUp

First 100+ Legacy Tiles Installed

Alumni Wall is ready for new Alumni Names and Alumni Legacy Tiles. The Wall  looks beautiful. Thanks to Ron Spurgeon '60 for the concept, John Brennan, Tony Mannara '64 and Jerry Thomas '54 for following it through. With our 10 Wall Builders and 122 Tile contributors, we raised $38,200.

We acknowledge that different graduating classes were of different sizes, so raw numbers don't tell the entire story. But you cannot get away from the class of '60 producing the most tile of any class with 15. They were helped with the wonderful idea of buying tiles for their deceased classmates. '61 followed with 12 Tiles and a few also purchased for their deceased classmates. Jerry Uribe '55 is working to get all, yes all, of the '53 through '57 grads on the wall.

We are now opening up for new tile orders through June 30 2012 or 150 new ones, whichever comes first. The bigger the order, the less expensive it gets.  Complete an order form on the Alumni Tiles Page or e-mail us and we will e-mail you one or Call 310-324-6675 x3010 or write and we will put one in the mail to you.

Notice on the form that there is a line for an Alumni Card. $51.00 get's you a an Alumni Membership Card which will permit you into all Serra sponsored student events at no charge for one year;  football games, basketball games, theatre performances such as the recently produced Grease which played to 550 people over 3 performances and more.
Look Forward to a 2nd
May Edition Coming soon.

A 2nd May edition coming soon featuring more on Serra's performance of The musical Grease, the class of '62 50th year Reunion, Answering the question "Who is the Serra grad that was our greatest wide receiver in school history"; Kurt Altenberg '61, Robert Woods '10, George Farmer '11, Marqise Lee '11, or David Williams '81. If you have some nominee's, send them fast, ....so far we think it may be David Williams '81.
