We get visitors and we make mistakes

Darryl May '85 brought his family, his Mom Esther May, his wife Jill, his daughter, Kayla,
Who says she is a future Zag, and his son Jordan who is undecided between being a Zag or a Bruin. Darryl was an '85 star and followed Coach Hurt to Gonzaga. Darryl putting together a group to come to the Dedication to Excellence celebration. The mistake.....the picture of the family vanished into the Ether...so here is Darryl. |

There are only a few days left and a few tickets left for the "Dedication to Excellence Dinner" celebrating Dwan Hurt's 25 years of Excellence at Serra. Brian Quinn '59 will introduce the keynote speaker, Jay Hillock, Manager of Pro Personnel for the Chicago Bulls. Here's the story. Our Honorary
Dinner Chair, Brian Quinn '59 was a star guard at Serra and a star at Loyola. Brian became Athletic Director at Loyola where he worked with a young coach named Jay Hillock who is our Keynote Speaker. Jay moved on from Loyola to coach at Gonzaga where a young basketball player from Serra named Dwan Hurt'81 matriculated and played. Those in attendance will get to meet the Triple Play of Quinn to Hillock to Hurt.
A little legacy and legend will be in attendance, Jim Muensterman '53, Serra's first All Catholic player, Bob Schneider '61, Tim Boyer '70, Zack Cannady '85, Arthur Tate '93 and others from Serra's first State Championship Team will be there.
Serra's other Varsity Coaches including State Championship Track Coach, Lori Smith-Thompson; State Championship Football Coach, Scott Altenberg; Championship Baseball Coach Wil Aaron; and CIF Championship. Lady Cavalier Basketball Coach, McKinsey Hadley Girls Basketball Coach will be there.
It won't be all athletics. Thomas Aquinas College has sponsored a table and will be joined by Nadi Wissa, Coach of Serra's Natioinal Math Championship Teams and Norm Chavez, one of Serra's teaching greats.
Monsignor Sal Pilato, Serra's great Principal and the man who selected Dwan Hurt as Dean will be in attendance. Monsignor is now Superintendent of Secondary Schools for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
The Silent Auction includes a signed/authenticated Andrew Bynum basketball, a signed Chris Paul Basketball, a Ronnie Lott signed 49'er jersey and a couple of items which may be even more valuable. Silent Auction items from across the spectrum are arriving daily. We will try to post a list.
This year's student award winner for her "Dedication to Excellence," is Urina Harrell. Ms. Harrell, while a championship heptathlete, is on her way to Duke University on an academic scholarship.

Take me out to the Ball Game
Coach Wil Aaron has brought Cavalier's baseball back to the top. After last year's super season, Serra's Record this year is 11-2 after knocking off Division 1 Millikan. Serra is undefeated in league play and are ranked first in Division V. The Team batting average is .479 and, the last we looked, SS Reggie Southall was hitting .773. Go to MaxPreps for the schedule and come out and watch the FireWorks. You may be able to buy some Crackerjacks.
Looking Back:
In the spring of 1959, Coach John Bero led 17 Cavaliers to its first Championship in the old Catholic league division of the CIF. Pictured her

Cavaliers Laid To Rest
Most of the time working in development and alumni relations is fun and exciting. We reuniting alumni and introduce our great school to new people. The past 3 weeks have been not been fun. We laid to rest "The Great Cavalier" Bob Sawyer '61, a well recognized alumnus Jerome Lotterberry '71, and former Alumni Director and Coach, John Brennan. Finaly, last Saturday we were notified that a young Cavalier Darryl Ford '03 also passed away.
The individual families and the Serra Family appreciate the hundreds of e-mails and phone calls we have received. Reading them and having personal relationships with each of these men is heartrending. Among the e-mails we received was one from Bill Salka '60 letting us know his brother, John, passed away.
Each time we receive a notification that one of us has passed, about 700 prayers get said throughout the Serra Campus. The notification is placed in the Dailey Bulletin at Serra and the passing is announced in the day's announcements.
Bob, John, Jerome, John, Darryl and all the others, thank you and you remain in our prayers.
