TRACK: Penn Relays and CIF Finals
The Serra Cavaliers competed at the Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania in front of 49,809 people. The world renowned relays are an exciting event for the Cavaliers to attend. Not only were the Cavaliers invited to compete in both boys & girls 4x100 meter relay and 4x400 meter relay, but they also had 3 of its members qualify in the individual field events that they offer for high school competition.
The Cavaliers started off with a bang on the prelim day with both squads winning the 4x100 & 4x400 meter relays in the small school divisions. The girls returned for the finals and won the silver medal in the 4x100 meter relay and GOLD WATCHES in the 4x400 meter relay Championship of America. The boys took on the pressure of not being shown up by the girls and won the Gold in the 4x100 meter relay small schools and also won the GOLD WATCHES in the 4x400 meter relay Championship of America but were later disqualified for a zone violation. Urina Harrell, a senior this year, took 5th place in the girls high school shot put throwing 40'9", Adoree Jackson won the silver medal in the high school boy's long jump, jumping 23'8" with Alexis Faulknor also competing in the Long Jump.

The trip was rewarding for the athletes to travel and receive the exposure needed as there were top college recruiters at the meet. The athletes were not only able to watch collegiate level athletes compete, but also World Class Olympic hopefuls and professionals in all relays and the exciting 100 meters in preparation for the 2012 London Olympics. Serra High School State runner-up and last year's former teammate Francisco Olloqui was competing for Cornell University at the Penn Relays and was able to talk to former classmates.
The Cavaliers are now preparing for the CIF championships Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Mt. SAC Community College. The Cavaliers hope for a double boys & girls CIF championship. In addition the Cavaliers are also in contention for a state title for both the boys and girls teams. According to www.dyestatcal.com the boys & girls teams are projected to finish 3rd in the state. However Coach Lori Smith-Thompson says "We will attempt to prove them wrong and finish first!"
