Serra's Track and Field

Lori with Carminita
Last Spring Serra won its CIF Division in Track and Field. In addition, the Cavaliers had 7 State Track & Field Champions and a total of 13 student athletes competing at the State meet.  At the Ring Dedication in their honor, Carminita Jeter, the world's fastest female sprinter, gave a motivating and inspiring presentation to the athletes and their parents.

Pictured here is super coach Lori Smith-Thompson with super sprinter Carminita Jeter and our State Champions..

Coach Lori has put together a super team of Coaches including Serra hurdle record holder Derek Knight '85. So we don't forget the old guys, pictured below is Theo Viltz '61 who ran the 120 yard (not meters) hurdles in 14.4. '

1961 Track Meet

Coach expects the Cavaliers to compete for the State Championship and to beat last years team average 3.12 GPA.

Here is the level at which Serra's track team competes, if you find yourself in New York on March 9-10, attend the New Balance National Indoor Meet and watch your fellow Cavaliers on a national stage.

Alumnae Turquoise Thompson '09 is currently the #3 in US in the 400 Intermediate Hurdler and is working to make the US Olympic Team.

Christian Services

Christian Service In ActionWhat do Habitat for Humanity, the Special Olympics, the Midnight Mission, Heal the Bay, Keep Gardena Beautiful, Head Start, and Windsor Gardens home for the elderly have in common?   They are all the recipients of service hours performed by Serra students.   As a part of the curriculum, Serra students must perform 10 hours of community service per semester.

Christian Services2Well, guess what, Kristine Sullivan, our Director of Christian Service, tells us that more than 40% of Serra's students volunteer a lot more than the basic requirements.

Just one example, twice a month, Serra students head for the Midnight Mission in downtown LA. When Ms. Sullivan posts the opportunity to perform this service, it is oversubscribed.

When you are bragging about the accomplishments of little old Gardena Serra, let people know that Serra students provide about 22,000 hours of Community/Christian Service.

Serra's Science Club

Science Club

Serra's Science Club traveled to the Jet Propulsion Laboratories on the edge of the San Gabriel Mountains for a Regional Meeting for the National Science Bowl. With pencils in one hand and fingers poised over the answer buttons, Mrs. Lota Castillo's Science 5 battled all morning against 23 other top southern California high schools. We can be proud of Ling Xiu Ge, Dominque True, Huy Nguyen, Oscar Murillo and Diane Villaroman who gave their best.

Tom Paavola #17

Number 17

Anyone who looks at the retired jerseys in the Serra Gym may wonder who was Tom Paavola #17? According to Tom's classmates, He was the "epitome of the Serra Man."   Tom was one of the good guys. He did well academically and lettered all four years in football, as a junior in basketball and his first three years in baseball. Tom was diagnosed with Leukemia late in 1956 and died around the time of graduation.....Tom was an inspiration to his teammates and classmates. Serra retired its first jersey in his honor..

A quote, "As you know, our coach in '57 was George Strohmeyer. He was pretty rough on us with double sessions, scrimmaging on gravel in shorts and wind sprints until you were ready to give up your lunch, then run some more. I never heard Tom complain about anything. He just did his job and did it with a determination rarely seen anywhere."   Frank Marinko
