Return Engagement Requested

The Coaches and Team thought that running through the line of cheerleaders, alumni and dancers at the start of the St. Francis game was a great experience. Coach Altenberg asked that we do it again before the Chaminade game. Have we started a tradition here? Those of you who want to participate, you have to be on the track at the north end of the field before 6:40. We will post a reminder to facebook and send an e-mail reminder.

HOMECOMING IS A HIT

If you did not attend Homecoming, you missed a great game and a great time. The evening started at 5:30 with hamburgers, hot dogs and soda pop at Alumni Park. Then at 6:15 came the Groundbreaking for the Alumni Wall.

Groundbreaking3

Pictured left to right with golden shovels are; Erick Rubalcava President, Lucy Orozco '05, Pat Lynch '59, Bob Sawyer '61, Bob Caniglia '61, Joe Cormier '81.  Pictured below are happy alumni and friends of Serra.

Groundbreaking1

We are selling Tiles (11.75 X 2.75) which will have the name and class year of the individual Alumnus inscribed on them and placed on the wall. (more info below)

Special mention must be made of Ron Spurgeon '60 who originated this idea. John Brennan, Tony Mannera '65 and Jerry Thomas '54, kept pushing the concept of memorial tiles and Mike Wagner, Principal, originated the Alumni Wall idea.

By 6:45, a group of Alumni had assembled on the track and, led by Joe Cormier '81, Ron Shepherd 73'and JV Basketball Coach Bernard McCumby , formed 2 cheering lines along with the famous red, blue and white clad Serra Cheerleaders and the great Serra Dance Team as the 2011 Serra Football Team charged onto the field for the kick-off. Everyone enjoyed it so much, we will be forming the lines again for the Chaminade game.

Serra Cheerleaders

The very young Cavs blasted into a 31-7 half time against an older and more mature St. Francis squad. But in the second half, St. Francis came back with a vengeance. Their comeback held the Cavalier crowd fearful and spellbound. Could the Cavs hold off the charging Golden Knights? With minutes left, the Cavaliers knocked the Knights for a loop and locked the game up. Final score: Serra 44 St. Francis only 30.   A perfect ending for a Homecoming Game.

After the end of game ceremonies, most alumni headed for the gym to meet classmates and others with ties to Serra.   As they entered the gym, they passed through a line of the Serra Dance team cheering for them and welcoming them back home.   A little later another large group of alumni walked into the gym. Where had they been? In the stands listening to the Serra Band play Herbie Hancock, the Ventures and more.

Band&Dancers

If you want your name and graduation year emblazoned on the Serra Alumni Wall, then fill out the information on the form below and send it to us.... you can go on-line to download a form or to notify friends.

The target date for completion of construction of the wall is January 15, 2012.

We will stop taking orders for Alumni Tiles shortly after January 15. In order to get the best price, orders to the engraver need to be in quantities of 250.

We will start another Alumni Tile order period June 1, 2012.

Aside from starting the Tile idea, Ron Spurgeon '60 came up with another one. Ron is honoring his friend and classmate Ed Coury '60 by purchasing a tile in Ed's name.   Ron and Ed attended St. Eugene as well as Serra together.   After Ron told me he was doing that, I thought what better way is there to honor a deceased classmate.
