HOMECOMING OCTOBER 21st.

Homecoming ClipArt

It's time for Homecoming. On October 21 take the opportunity to see old friends and make some new ones.

We have a lot planned. Get to Kretschmar Stadium and to the Alumni Lawn at the north end of the stadium by 6:00. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be on the grill. At 6:15, we will have a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Alumni wall. We all will be able to immortalize ourselves as Serra graduates. For $200.00 you will be able to purchase a tile and have your name and graduation year engraved and the tile will be mounted on the wall. We will be posting a picture of a sample tile and more details on the website and on facebook shortly. www.la-serrahs.org.

Alumni will have their own entrance through Room #405. Alumni will receive a wrist band that gets you special privileges at the game.  Once through #405, Alumni with be able to proceed to the north end of the stadium where a special seating section be. Alumni guides will be in position to help. At 6:35, Alumni will want to will assemble on the track. At 6:50, the alumni will form 2 lines in front of the tunnel for the team to run through as roar onto the field to defeat St. Francis. Alumni can move to the Alum section or they can watch the game from the track. (We cannot go onto the grass. Last year, Serra was penalized twice for encroachment by spectators)

After the game, the Alumni will gather in the gym for old times. All the Serra Varsity Coaches from all the teams and the teacher's too are invited.

Go Cavs!

Archbishop Gomez visits Serra

ArchBishopThe Serra Community was blessed to host the new Archbishop of Los Angeles, His Excellency Jose Gomez, to campus. The occasion was the annual meeting of the 50 Catholic High School Presidents and Principals. The Serra students did not have to rise to the occasion. Except for a few more adults on campus, it appeared to be a normal day. Six hundred fifty (650) kids engaged in their regular activities.

To say that the visitors were impressed is an understatement. Three of the Presidents/Principals remarked to Development Director, Joe Cormier '81 that "this place is magic."   They are right!  Note to all alumni, parents and friends of Serra, you can be very, very, proud.

If you wish to read the text of His Excellency's remarks, go to:.

Profit Charitable Foundation
(Eugene Profit Class of '82)

Eugene ProfitWe are pleased to report the receipt of a substantial contribution from the Profit Foundation. The Foundation is run by Eugene Profit '82. After graduating from Serra, Eugene attended Yale, graduated and proceeded to play for the New England Patriots and Washington Redskins for 9 years.

While with the Redskins, Eugene prevented Joe Cormier '82, Serra's Development Director, from catching passes for the Vikings. After Eugene left pro football, he built and operates one of this country's premier investment funds.  Eugene is the man behind Serra's Eugene Profit awards. This award is given annually to the student who achieves the highest grade point average on each of 41 Serra athletic teams.

Serra Alumnus meets President Obama
(Sam Ross)

The President gets his picture taken with Sam Ross, Serra '66. The President has met Sam twice. Sam received his B.A. from CSULB, then earned a Master's from Xavier University in Cincinatti. Sam began his business career with Procter & Gamble and retired from P&G in 02. He is now President of Ionic Communications, a growing package design and graphic equity firm. To keep busy, Sam is a Board Member and Burser for SOLA, a group of laymen dedicated to providing financial support for qualified seminarians and Oratorians of St. Phillip Neri Seminary.

Visions and Voices featuring Dana Gioia b'69

DGJason Reeves, who rivals Mr. Jim Barnes as an English teacher, his wife and Vince Kates traveled to USC to attend USC's Vision and Voices series featuring Dana Gioia '69. Dana was introduced by Dr. Max Nikias, USC's President. Dana spoke and read his poetry to a full house in a stunning performance.

Afterwards, we managed to let Dr. Nikias know that not only do the Cavaliers supply USC with its Widney Professor of Poetry and Public Culture (Dana Gioia) but also some pretty good football players.

On Tuesday, November 15th from 6:30-7:30 PM, Dana will be lecturing on "The Catholic Writer Today" at USC's Ronald Tutor Campus Center, Office of Admissions Classroom on the 2nd floor. If interested in attending, your contact is Shelia Garrison-skgarris@usc.edu or 213-740-1864.

Visitors Department

Alumni PhotoCrystal King '11 came by to see one of her favorite teacher's, Jason Reeves. Crystal was editor of the El Padre for 2 years and, in her spare time, made the football team go as head manager. Crystal plans on going into sports medicine.

DeShawn Burton '88 asked about what was going on for homecoming. DeShawn ended up on the Alumni Council and will be working at Homecoming. Moffer Goff '87 may be doing the same thing.

Mike '67, Gary '65 Heil and their mom stopped by Serra for a "nostalgia tour of their Alma Mater." They enjoyed meeting Dean Hurt, Norm Chavez and other teachers as they toured the campus. After visiting Serra, they were off to St. Francis Cabrini for a visit to their grammar school.

Pictured are Gary and Mike Heil, their Mom, Rosemary Nuss and Brttani Maston "05, from the Development office.

Helping Serra

As you can see on the left, we are ahead of last year. Here are the fundraising plans. Watch your mail for the Annual Report and Fundraising letter in your mail boxes soon.

In addition, you will be able to have your name and class year engraved on a tile placed on the soon to be built Alumni wall. Order forms will be available at Homecoming and will be available soon on the Serra website. We will be doing a separate e-mail for the Tiles.

Thank you to all who have their 13 month Alumni Cards. These cards get you into Serra sponsored athletic and performing arts events such as school play, "Class Action." The Alumni Card application is below.

Remember, contributions for Tiles and Alumni Cards go into Tuition Assistance, specific scholarship funds and the Adopt a Student program.
