Father Charles Carpenter returns to Serra
Mike Maiori '60 was instrumental in bringing the famous Missionary and Serra graduate Father Charles Carpenter '63 back to Serra for the first time in almost 50 years. Father said Mass for the student body and then visited with teachers, staff and representatives of Campus Ministry. Father Charles, a member of The Missionaries of Fatima, continues to work in Mexico and promises to return to campus before another 50 years pass. It is worth visiting Father's website Missionaries of Fatima.
Mike Maiori is shown here presenting a check to Campus Ministry student rep Anthony Chanman and other Campus Ministry members Christina Gonzalez, Diane Villaroman, and Gabriela Rodriquez. That's Father Charles on the right. Esteban Hernandez took the picture.
Mike's check is on behalf of Thomas Aquinas College supporting the April 21 celebration honoring Dean and Coach Dwan Hurt. Find out more about the college at Thomas Aquinas College. |

More Tough Guys

The Serra football team from the fall of 1989 was one of the greatest high school football teams of all time. The '89 team sliced through the pre-season and Camino Real League schedule in a breeze compiling a 10-0 record.
The 89'ers then charged into the C.I.F. play-offs. Our Cavaliers took down Morningside 18-0 in the first round, they followed that up by defeating Arroyo Grande 32-25. Then easily beat Notre Dame 12-3 in the semi-finals. The Championship game loomed as Serra's Cavaliers met up against mighty Lompoc on December 9, 1989 at El Camino College. Lompoc featured Napoleon Kauffman at running back, who later starred for the Oakland Raiders. But mightier Serra took an early lead and led all the way. Final score '89 Serra Cavaliers 34, Lompoc 31.
Coach Leo Hand was quoted after the game saying, "I'm so happy for these guys. This one is special because these guys are the nicest, most unselfish bunch I've ever been around."
Plan now to attend Serra's opening game September 14th. We will be honoring Serra's First State Champion Football Team.
Thanks to those great Cavaliers.
