Ted '55 & Dawnyale '06

Ted & Dawnyale

On a bright sunny afternoon.Ted Bruey Jr. '55 walked over from his home in Hawthorne to pay his alumni dues.

As we left the alumni office to watch a little of the Junior Varsity game, Ted remarked, "see those benches? My Dad built those benches 56-57 years ago, he also helped build the bleachers and the press box."

Sitting on the benches that Ted Sr. built are Ted Jr. and Cheerleader Coach Dawnyale Sloan '06, who follows the tradition of Coaches Strohmeyer, Hyduke et.al , and has her Cheerleaders "running the bleachers" that Ted's Dad helped build a long, long, long time ago.

Class of 1981 Reunion

81 Class Reunion

The Class of 1981 held their 30th class

reunion on Augusst 13th ,a beautiful Saturday night in the Serra Gymnasium.

In the 61' vs. 81'  challenge, we have to report that 61' raised more money than 81' for the Tuition Assistance Program.  However, on the who had the most Fun-O-Meter, the judges rated the 81' as a narrow winner over 61'.

Catholic WomenTake a look at the happy group in the bleachers. The 81'ers were blessed with the  attendance of 3 ladies from the L.A. Urban Catholic High School Association.  Teri Owns,  Cathy Darmas, and Cescily McKoy are shown here presenting a check to President Erick Rubalcava. A budding tradition at reunions is the "across the years" feature of the reunions.
Coming next is the Class of 76' on October 22nd.

Classes pic

From across the year's left to right, Frank Flanagan '11, Pierre Johnson II, 01, Ron Story '81, Anthony Trahan '81, Rick Martim '71, Renault Fields '61, Bob Sawyer '61, John Kretzschmar '55.

Another Serra Alumnus goes to USC

DanaDana Gioia Gioia, class of '59,  was a student of Mr. Cook,  Editor-in-Chief of the Cavalier, President of the Inter-Club Council and more.  Dana received his B.A. from Stanford, his M.A from Harvard and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Business School.  He retired early from a successful business career at General Foods in order to write full time.  He did well enough that Dana Gioia from Hawthorne, CA and Serra High School was appointed Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts and served the United States in this position from January 29th  2003 until January 22nd 2009.

In yet another Serra contribution to USC, Dana has been appointed The Judge Widney Professor of Poetry and Public Culture at USC.  An evening of Poetry and Music will take place in the Bovard Auditorium on the USC campus on Tuesday evening, September 27 at 7:00PM.  A contingent of Serra staff and students will attend.  If you are interested in joining us, contact Vince Kates no later than January 20 at ext. 3010 or e-mail at vbkates@la-serra.org.

Mr. Burke Award

Mr Burke AwardMr. Alfred Burke was honored as Serra's # 1 Fan at the opening football game vs, Notre Dame, Sept. 2nd. He was escorted onto the SHS track by his sons, Jack and Patrick, Tim Boyer '70 and John Kretschmar'55. His daugher Carol surprised him by riding up on her scooter.  Mr. Burke was presented a SERRA # 1 jersey by President Erick Rubalcava. Mr. Burke then led the crowd with his famous cheer "  C'mon SERRA!,  Let's Go SERRA!!. Thanks Mr. Burke for cheering on SERRA's teams in all sports since 1969!!!!

Math & Science Teacher's Honored

Serra's outstanding Math and Science instructors marched onto the Serra field at halftime of the Notra Dame game to be reconized for their achievements. This group led the Math Team to TWO consecutive National Championships. The Science students were award winners at the LA Country Fair. Instructors include, Mr. Nadi Wissa, Director of Faculty Supervision and Math Dept Chair,  Dr.Lota Castillo Science Dept Chair, Kristen Tordillos, Erin Mc Caffery, Ming Ying, Garen Stephan, Ademole Turner' 95, Jaclyn Esquibel, Lucy Orozco '05, Mimi Cullari and Mac Hadley. Also on the field was Brianna Ani, First Place Winner, last April, at the LA County Science Fair and Chris Boyer who placed third. Congrat's to all,

Special Thanks

JSHS , President , Erick Rubacava and Development Director, Joe Cormier "81" on the right, are happy to present to Carlo Lomeli and Lomeli's Resturant a plaque and a honorary Alumni Membership card to thank him for his many years of sponsorship.  Thanks Carlo!

One of Serra's Finest
  Bro. William Bolts

Brother William Bolts has been back at Serra for the '61 and '71 reunions and promises to return for the '62 reunion. He began his ministry at Serra in 1957.  He initially taught world history, freshman and sophomore religion.  He also served as librarian until 1961.  Later he taught U.S. history and inaugurated a senior history seminar.  Brother earned his MA in history from UCLA in 1966.  Brother became Assistant Principal in 1962, Director of the Marianist Community in 1964 and Principal in 1966.  He left Serra in 1970.

Afterward he taught at Riordan High School in San Francisco.  He received his doctorate from Carnegie-Mellon in 1976.  His dissertation, THE CATHOLIC EXPERIENCE IN AMERICA, was published by Benziger in 1980. He has authored two other books in history.  He served as Marianist Assistant Provincial from 1982-1990, followed by service at UCSC, Queen of Apostles Parish, and in Vancouver, BC.  He returned to the Marianist Center in Cupertino in 2009 where he serves on three diocesan committees and works in adult religious education in parishes and for teachers.

Bro. Bill looks back on 57 years as a Marianist Brother still devoted to witness, prayer and passing on the faith to others. He said " I liked Serra Best!"  We are fortunate to have had him at Serra.

Another Serra Powerhouse?

Jerome Auzout, class of "73," has taken on the task of building the Cavaliers another powerhouse.  Lady Cavaliers tennis season starts this fall and the men begin in the spring.

Athletes who sign up will be able to say they were on the FIRST Serra tennis team.  Take a look at Coach Jerome, 3rd from the left, many years ago surrounded by a few other early 70's long jumpers.

Serra Visitors

Will Calloway class of 06...visited Serra to see Mr. Rubalcava and Coach Hurt. He ended up talking with the great Norm Chavez and sat at his old desk. Will is on track to graduate in engineering from UNLV in 12/12. Will keeps busy. He competes internationally in Tae Kwon Do and he's published 2 books.

Look  for  " The Xenton Chronicles 1 & 2" and he  will be publishing #3 soon. You can purchase Will's work on lulu.com and amazon.com. (Will, you need to publish another to match Bro. Bolts) Will also plays guitar and drums with the Newman Center at UNLV and will help us in updating the 2006 Serra class roster. Reach Will at Facebook.com/thexentonchronicles.

In the interest of fairness, Mike Mahoney, Bosco Tech '63 stopped in, toured the school and bought a Friend of Serra card for he and his wife Patty.

Denny Grace, Serra '62 toured the campus and discussed preparations for a reunion for the class of '62.   While here, Denny uncovered the Dave Ohara plaque. Mike Raffanello and Sam Braekel will assist Denny.. We don't think it likely that '62 will have more fun than '81 or '61 or raise more money than '61. "71, '59 and '60 will say their reunions were the best.

Faye in NYThree recent Serra graduates stopped by. Faye Villaroman, '10, stopped to see Mr. Wissa, Mr. Chavez and other teachers. Faye is pursuing a major in Computer Science at Stanford. Faye was ONE of 50 Computer Science students chosen from the entire U.S. and Canada to attend Google's week long FUSE program. Faye traveled to New York, all expenses paid, to connect with Google's engineers and her fellow winners. Fay reports that "it was an inspiring, insightful and rewarding career experience."

Marquise Lee '11 and Marquis Murray '11, to wish the Cavaliers luck. Some of you may have heard of Marquis who is playing a little Football at USC along with Robert Woods #2, George Farmer #88, and DaJohn Harris #98 is a 3 year varsity defensive end for the Trojans. If you don't know it, Marquis is #9.

Our Alma Mater is pretty good.

A Great Cavalier Passes

Patty Dimond-Stuckmeyer the daughter of Harold Diamond '54 recently wrote us regarding the passing of her father, December 15, 2010. His funeral Mass was held at American Martyrs and Monsignor Barry officiated.  Internment is at Holy Cross.  "I received the alumni newsletter this afternoon."  I have to say that Dad read every word of the newsletter.  He had such fond memories of his high school years "back in the day".  Still shocked about the school being co-ed!!!  I ask that all alumni say a prayer for Dad.

Please remember Harold in your prayers.

Helping Serra !

Thank you.  The August eNewsletter produced a good number of Alumni Association Card contributions.  It also produced additional contributions to the Father Jorge da Silva Memorial Fund.  The official Serra fall fundraising letter will be in the US Mail later this month.

A business note:  We have over 6,000 Alumni, we think that we can reach 3,000 through this eNewsletter, Facebook postings and regular mail.  We also are expanding our Friends of Serra (FOS) list.  FOS gives us another 125.  Last year, the Alumni contributed $109,780.  Divide $109,780 by 3,125 and you get an average Alumni and FOS contribution of $35.13....not much.  Through the end of August, Alumni and FOS have contributed $19,414.73....this includes Tuition Assistance, daSilva Memorial Scholarship, Lynch Scholarship, Adopt-A-Student etc,

In order to receive your Alumni Card, fill out the coupon below and make check out for $51.00 or more (if you want to include your wife...add $25.00) and mail it to:

Serra High School

Attn: Alumni Association

14830 S. Van Ness Ave

Gardena, CA 90249

You will receive the satisfaction of contributing to the remarkable success that is Serra.  All proceeds go to the Tuition Assistance Fund.

This Alumni card will admit you to all Home athletic, visual & performing arts events sponsored by JSHS through September 30, 2012.  The card is not valid for opponent, CIF or State sponsored events.

If you are not an alumnus, but want to contribute, send a check for $52.00 or more.  Your card will have your name, FOS (Friend of Serra) and the picture of the Cavalier.

There will be other fundraising events throughout the year sponsored by both Alumni and the School.  Watch future eNewsletters, follow us on Facebook, or visit the Serra website at www.la-serrahs.org .
