Class of 1981 will host 30 year Reunion

The Class of 1981 will host their 30 year Reunion in the Cavalier Gymnasium from 4:30 to 10:00 on August 13, 2011. If you are from "81," please get your money reservation in yesterday.

Anthony Trahan, Ron Story, Joe Cormier, Eric Patin and others have been the organizers.

The question will soon be answered whether or not the Class of "81" will have more fun and/or raise more money than the class of "61."  Coach Hurt says "81" will far surpass the reunions held so far this year, "61," the "71" and the "65." Coach Kates "61" says, "fat chance." Of course, Jim Meenan will e-mail and say class of "60" had the best reunion ever.

Here are more precise numbers for the 146 members of Serra's 2011 graduating class. 80.1% were accepted to a 4 year college or/university. 19.9% are planning to attend a 2 year college or vocational school. $6,017,478.08 in college scholarships have been offered. Serra students do their job in the classroom.

Outside the classroom, Serra's students participate in 25 different campus organizations/ clubs. For the athletically inclined, there are 43 teams spread among 20 different teams. Serra student's stay productive outside the classroom.

Mr. Burke is Back
 Burke & Aaron

Mr. Alfred Burke, Mr. GOOOOO SERRRRA, has been attending Serra's games across all sports Since 1969 when his son Jack "72" attended Serra. Prior to Mr. Burke's heart attack at the Camarillo play-off Game last fall, the last game he missed was on Sept 5, 2008 at Silverado in Victorville. After his Heart attack, Mr. Burke missed the grand total of 2 games and was back for the 2010 State Final at the Home Depot Center.

On July 7th, Mr. Burke walked into the Serra office to present his annual gift to Serra. On hand to receive the gift was Aaron Colson from the class of 2010. Aaron is preparing for his second year at Dartmouth.

With the Notre Dame-Serra game on September 2, we are only weeks away from hearing a favorite sound of all Cavaliers......................GOOOOOOO SERRRRA.

"Pooh" Jeter Visits Serra
Vince & Pooh

Eugene "Pooh" Jeter III from the class of "02" visited Serra during July. Pooh gives back to Serra in many ways. Last spring, Pooh returned to Serra to see his jersey, "JETER" "11, " retired, and spoke of how hard he worked and how he places himself in the hands of God.

Pooh's career as a professional basketball player has been fascinating. After graduating from Serra, Eugene had a great career at Portland State. He headed off to Europe and played in the Ukraine, Spain and Israel. Last year he played for the Sacramento Kings and expects to play for them again. Pooh is an example of Coach Hurt's favorite quote "Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn't work hard."

Father Jorge da Silva
Jorge de Silva

Br. Jorge da Silva, S.M.  served at Serra from 1953 through 1966.  His first position was as a teacher (Religion, Latin and French). He later served as a counselor, Vice-Principal and as Principal.  Br. Jorge was one of those rare human beings who benefitted all with whom he came in contact.  Fr. Jorge left Serra in 1966 and transferred to Archbishop Mitty in San Jose.  Br. Jorge returned to Gardena to be ordained a priest at St. Anthony's Church on June 12, 1971.   The now Father Jorge returned to the San Jose area where he continued his ministry until he died and was buried on November 30, 2009 at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Los Altos, CA.

In Fr. Jorge's memory, Serra Alumni initiated the Father Jorge da Silva memorial fund.  In Father Jorge's memory, an 80% scholarship is awarded to a Serra student who; has a 3.00 GPA, a record of community service,  a record of participation in an extracurricular activity and financial need.  Father Jorge's legacy will live on through this scholarship.

Welcome back Joe

SHS Principal, Mike Wagner is happy to announce that Joe Cormier "81" on the left, has returned to Serra as the Development Director.  Joe graduated from USC where he was an All-Pac 10

Joe & Mike

Tight End and spent 4 years playing for the Vikings and the Raiders

and has spent his career in sales & marketing. He has 2 daughters, one on her way to the University of North Carolina on a volleyball scholarship, and the other on her way to Serra.  Welcome back Joe!

Are You Ready For Some Serra Football

Football TeamSerra's 2011 football season opens September 2nd at home at 7:00PM against Notre Dame.

There will be a special ceremony before the game planned for 6:40PM. If you have played for any Serra team in the last 42 years, you will want to be there early.

Now to the first game. Serra beat a very young Notre Dame on theSenior Players Knights home field last year.

This year Notre Dame will visit Serra Field with a much more experienced team. The Knights will feature one of CIF's fastest tailbacks and will be playing with pay back on their minds.

Coach Altenberg told us, "Although we lost a lot of good players, we have good ones returning. We anticipate that players from our undefeated Junior Varsity and from our once defeated Freshman will help. We expect to win."

The rest of September will be busy with home games against an improved Mira Costa squad and a fast and physical Narbonne team. The Cavaliers will travel to face a tough Redondo and a rebuilt Banning.

Alumni Visitors to Serra

Gil Bucks

Along with Mr. Burke and Pooh Jeter, some of the other visiting Alumni this month includes Gil Buck from Serra's first graduating class in 1953. Gil was driving close by and visited for the first time in many years. Gil, thanks for contributing to the continuing success of Serra......Kayla Jefferson and Pierre Johnson Jr. from 2001 were here to plan for their 10-year reunion to be held in conjunction with Homecoming.....Zarak Cannady, Class of 85, visited. Zarak's son is a 2nd generation Cavalier.... Marshall Porter, a pretty good hurdler in 1960, visited.

Marshal's Mom, Elzenobia Porter raised money for Serra by having her friends write checks for her birthday for SHS. She consolidated the money and then made one big contribution. Thank you, Mrs. Porter. We would mention Brian Tate's name, class of 1986, but won't until he pays for his Alumni Card. Daysha Broadway, '02, stopped in and is helping us with current phone numbers and e-mail addresses for her class. Daysha, thank you. Our youngest visitor was Malachi Betson from "10."

Bro. Bernard Pleiman, S.M.

Bro. PleimanThe mention of Bro. Pleiman last month smiling down on Serra's successes in math brought a couple of responses.

This from John McNeil ("57") "Looking back, one of my regrets is that by the time I realized how important his influence was on me, he had passed away before I could tell him. Brother was my Math teacher all 4 years at Serra from 53-57. He was the finest teacher I ever had and possibly the most important influence on my life. I taught for 16 years and then spent 25 years in the high tech industry.

His influence continues; this afternoon I am tutoring a student at the University of New Mexico."  From someone who requests anonymity. "You only missed your homework once in Bro. Pleiman's class."
