Santa Lucia Dinner!

On Wednesday, December 10th we will hold our annual Lucia Dinner. For decades we have gathered on or near December 13th to remember St. Lucia Day. This has been a tradition here at Edgebrook Lutheran Church that harks back to some of our early members of Scandinavian descent. The dinner will be begin at 6:00 pm and will feature ham, Swedish meatballs, potato sausage, and cheeses. Of course, there will be glogg (the Swedish warm spiced wine delight) for the adults. The ticket price is $15 for adults, $6 for children ages 4 through 12, free for children 3 and under. Additionally, all attendees are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share. (This year, in order to ease the clean up after the dinner, we are asking that the shared dishes be brought in disposable dishes and/or trays.)

Following the dinner, we will gather in the sanctuary to enjoy our traditional Lucia procession which will feature many of our children and youth. This is a sweet moment in the Christmas season for our church when our young ones honor the memory of this sainted woman. A true highlight of the evening.

As many know, St. Lucia was an early Christian martyr who dedicated her life to feeding the poor. We want to continue making our traditional Lucia Dinner a genuine moment to honor this ancient saint by supporting a mission that helps feed the poor in our community. This anniversary year ELC has made Elijah's Pantry an important mission for the whole year with our 7500 Pound Food Challenge. The Lucia Team believes that it would be appropriate to end our 75th Anniversary Year with a gift to Elijah's Pantry that will help them continue their mission of feeding those in need especially as we go into the winter season. Therefore, any net profit from our Lucia Dinner will be given to Elijah's Pantry.

Reservations for the Lucia Dinner will be taken during coffee hour on 11/23, 11/30 and 12/7.

Or you may call the Church Office or contact Karen Newton directly at 773-631-2910 or [email protected]. We encourage you to reserve early as there is limited seating and this event always sells out fast...If you have any questions please contact anyone on the Lucia Team (Joanne Friz, Elsie & John  Lindgren, Marni Denk, Carol Beu, Joan Liss, Mike Ford and Karen Newton)

See you then...and God Jul !

THE 7500 LB. FOOD CHALLENGE- OVER 6300     POUNDS COLLECTED SO FAR! --464 lbs came from our "Garden of Eatin'"!!

THANKS BE TO GOD FOR THE MANY BLESSINGS HE BESTOWS ON US

Members of ELC and friends...... In January of this year when we presented the challenge to Edgebrook Lutheran Church to raise 7500 pounds of food items for our friends at Elijahʼs Pantry in Logan Square, we did have some concerns that we could accomplish our goal. WELL! ...... as we have delivered over 6400 lbs including 464 lbs of fresh produce from our  "Garden of Eatin" we have no doubt that we won't reach that goal, and possibly go over the top.

LET'S STEP UP OUR EFFORTS AS WE GO INTO THE HOLIDAY SEASON....A TIME WHEN WE ALL COUNT OUR MANY BLESSINGS, AND TAKE FOR GRANTED THAT WE WILL HAVE PLENTY OF FOOD ON OUR TABLES WITH CHOICES.

Here are ideas for Holiday Food Items which we can provide and help to assure our Elijahʼs Pantry recipients of a good meal during the next months:

Boxed Mashed Potatoes

Cake Mixes

Stuffing

Canned Vegetables

Canned Sweet Potatoes

An Appeal from Night Ministry

Our "cookie jar" is getting low.  Can you help by bringing a bag or two of any type of cookie to church?  We use 800 cookies or more each month, and the donation of cookies really helps to stretch our budget.  There is a collection box in Fellowship Hall for cookies or they may be dropped off in the church office.

Also, should you want to rid your home of an excess of Halloween candy after the last trick or treater has departed this year, please bring the candy to us.  We will include it as a special treat

It's just around the corner!  Candy Cane Lane--The Children's Christmas Shop: We are looking for adult volunteers to help welcome young children and their families to our church.

Candy Cane Lane is on Sunday, November 30th from 1-3pm and children ages 3-10 are welcome to come and shop for the loved ones in their lives. Help encourage the spirit of the season as we welcome the community inside. We need greeters, people to work the registration, cash and gift wrapping stations and teens to act as 'elves' and accompany young children in the store.

Please contact Liz McChesney  or Becky Hennessey  for more information or to sign up.

This year's Children's Christmas Program is entitled: Song of Joy. Created by our own Leona Krompart, Song of Joy combines festive music with rhythmic speaking and instruments to help tell the story of Mary and Joseph preparing for and living after the birth of Jesus.

This program will take place at 5 pm on Saturday, December 13th and then again on Sunday, December 14th. The Sunday School of Edgebrook Lutheran Church are participating and all the kids, preschool through 5th grade, will play a part in helping us all remember the meaning of Christmas and put the Song of Joy in our heart this season
